In 1958, some of the J's were used in local freight service after they were replaced on passenger trains by leased diesels. The difference was the dog house on the tender and I have read the tandem rod was removed between the 2nd and third driver. Not all J's were modified. On page 70 of the Norforlk and Western Steam book, there is a Picture of the 600 class engine with the doghouse and extra tender after it was pulled from passenger service. The aux tender was in black paint only. Maybe
Paul Good idea on trying different distances for the effect. These new units are the first to have the numbers under the cab that reflect. I took some of the following units and the numbers do not show up. The LED number boards are really neat but some of the people I talked to did not like the effect of those new bright number boards. CZ This is on the ground at Monolith at close to 40mph. I was surprised this one came out. See the large number boards and how much light they put out.
I caught one of the new 6600 class GEVO's C4 unit at Summit on the Mojave sub doing about 40 mph while pacing it. The new units have LED's in the number boards also and really great reflective lettering. CZ
Thanks. I wonder if there are any pics out there of Class J's pulling freight in the 40's or 50's... Would it make sense on my 1940s layout for a Class J pulling freight next to the Powhatan Arrow?
In 1958 after diesels were pulling the passenger trains, the J's were used in local freight service. There are pictures of them being used and a dog house was installed on the tender to house the head end brakeman, but not all of the J's got
One formula says a loaded coal car (gross weight 143 tons, a typical limit these days) needs less than 190 pounds of pulling force to roll at 10 mph on level track. If that's true, the SD70ACe can maintain 10 mph with a 100,000 ton train. (On second thought-- might be more like 8-9 mph. In any case, it's supposed to be able to keep moving at some low speed, if that formula is right.)
In theory, this is probably true, but getting back to reality, the initial
They have a lot of new items in the book. The pictures always look like tinplate models to me, but that might be my perception. The new NKP Berkshire looks plain and is missing the visor on the headlight, which is the signature look for the NKP Berkshires. The drawings of the C&O version uses the same steam and sand dome position, which is incorrect and the tender looks the same as the NKP. That might be fixed with the production models. The Veranda turbine seems to be the Lionel version and
the lawsuit? I didn't remember if they got the PCM PAs or not. You know, MTH should start a new "L Series (Obtained in a Lawsuit)" of locomotives. And I think their attorneys would have no trouble finding ways to expand the offerings in the L series .
Good one. The L series. I like your thinking! The PA's were obtained in the lawsuit against the Korean builder that made them for BLI. They should look fairly nice with a bonus, HA of DCS
But understand, RTR and collecting may be where part of the HO hobby is going, but it is not where it came from, and many of us have no interest in getting on that bus. And our reaction to the MTH "phenomena" would be the same with or without the lawsuits. If I wanted those kinds of trains, I would have went to O gauge years ago. Sheldon
Sheldon Good thoughts and I would have to believe that Mike might be looking to create a market that
Well, since no one else has made drawbar connected PA's, who's locos could it be? You may well be correct, but they still don't run on my control system.
The BLI PA's for the A and B set are draw bar connected. You can install Kadee's if you want but the draw bar was used because, the sound system has a connector from the A to the B unit. I did purchase a few of those and the tooling is very nice overall.
