How many cars are required to be separated between a tanker car carrying haz material and the locomotive(s) when strung together? I thought six was the minimum although I seen only maybe 5 cars between the locomotives-it was hard to see or maybe the tanker WAS the 6th car. Maybe they should up that to 8 after that tanker sliding.
I was re-watching a video about trains and the steel industry and I'm still astonished how much tonnage one of those metal ladle cars weighs when it's full--400 tons. If one were to simulate in HO scale using a model ladle car, how much (in ounces?) would it need to weigh? I nearly flunked in high school in math so I'm no genius when it comes to figuring stuff out like this.
I'll try to describe this part as best as I can- I bought a used train set at a garage sale with an Athearn HO scale F7 but after opening it up to install a DCC decoder, a plastic part that couples the motor to the one of the wheelsets is missing. It's the black, rounded middle plastic piece (brush motor maybe?) that connects between the motor and the wheelset. It's slightly larger than the other black pieces. What is that piece called so I won't end up ordering the wrong part from
I'm turning into a Grinch just by trying to get the Bachmann HO loco wired properly. So far I think I fried a decoder due to the metal chassis. I used an NCE "basic" decoder and -nothing-. I wonder if it's like wiring an Athearn Gp-38 or 40 where I had to drill a hole to fit a screw and solder one of the wires. Anyone out there had no problems converting this SOB into DCC or is it just not even worth the effort?
Not sure which loco your talking about.(diesel?) If it's a split frame design, you need to isolate the motor pick ups from the side frames. Also isolate the truck power wipers from the frame halves. Run your own wires to everything. NCE might replace that under warrenty. If not, they have a $10 fried decoder trade in program.
It's a Bachmann EMD FT Diesel Loco. I think the frame is not only one piece but it's also weighs down the loco.
Has anyone successfully converted a DC Bachmann EMD GP50 Diesel in HO scale to DCC? The inside motor and gears are enclosed in a metal chassis.
Are cattle cars still being used today or are they being used as MOWs or even dismanted like the icebox cars? My layout is set between 1980 and today and so far, I have them on an abandoned siding.
Once in a while, I end up working on one scale more than another one. I have two scales: HO & N. At times before, I work on N scale for a while, maybe longer, and then when going back to work on HO scale, the tracks, cars, etc. look and feel like they're S scale rather than Ho. This feeling does wear off but does anyone have some sort of "doctorish" way of describing it like "Scale-itis?"
Just a curiosity-has anyone ever designed little miniature outdoor Christmas decors that light up in HO scale to clip onto the street lamps like the real ones attached to poles?
With the price of gas, I've decided to add a worse-case scenario to my HO layout-the only gas station in town is selling gas at $10 a gallon! Here's the picture: http://frankodragon.deviantart.com/art/Train-Set-Pic-F-87129887
