+1 on the Brennans Ballast. Also try crushed limestone, and construction sand, as ballast and as fillers below the actual ballast to save some $$. Both available at the local Home Depot type stores. Limestone on the left, Brennans on right, sifted limestone in center:

Dmac73000 You have a lot to think about. This forum focuses on O scale (+/- 1:48 Atlas, Lionel, MTH 3-rail mainly), although 2-rail O Scale is available, and S scale (American flyer 2-rail). Modelling trains can be related to space you have available for a layout, and realism you desire. Post War Toy trains are not scale models, but close approximations. Modern 'Scale' cars and Locomotives, include remote control, sound, and true to scale size and details. HO Scale (1:87) is another route
