Dave Vollmer wrote: ...or when to stop counting rivets! Figured I'd share my latest blog post. Let's call the solution the "sweet spot." This solution is the point at which the amount of work required to make a model more accurate exceeds the fun the modeler would have in doing so. So, let's define two curves: What makes this an initial value problem (i.e., the sweet spot is a unique solution to a very specific set of circumstances) is that the slope of these curves varies greatly

The Old Dog isn't ready to vote yet. But it does want to make an observation. Wouldn't the Chesapeake & Atlantic Railroad design be improved if the Coal/Ore Dock were replaced say by a shell fish cannery? Also, the Old Dog must wonder if some of these designs might end up in MR's new layout design contest. They are 200 square foot designs. Have fun

SpaceMouse wrote: 27-3 No not that kind of score. I was in the art store with my wife and I came across some wooden rulers. They were 3/16" x 1" by 12" of some of the straightest-grain poplar I've seen--for .21 I got 5. They had yardsticks for .71. I got one. Perfect complement to my popsicle sticks and this guy. With prices like that, the Old Dog must ask, why didn't you buy a lot more? Great finds like that don't come along every day. Have fun
Chip In looking at that design, one must ask, would there be any chance of adding a couple inches to the bottom of the layout to put in a siding? That would increase interest by allow one to do meets and/or passes there. Have fun
A quick thought. Have you considered maybe making the layout dual guage, say HO and HOn3? A dual guage double slip turnout would certainly be a critter to behold. Have fun
The Old Hound sees some problems with using this design. 01) Most of the layout appears to be three or more feet wide. Fixing problems that occur on the oval is going to require some very long arms. This is especially true of the track hidden in the buildings since the first floor is going to be fixed. Having some structure in the fore ground will make things even worst. 02) The curve yard may look interesting, but will make couple difficult in some areas. 03) The track does NOT cross one end of
