I have this locomotive and it does not work well with the Lionel 80w transformer included in the modern ready to run sets. I bought this loco last Christmas and it would not run on my under the tree holiday layout (6' X 18'). I thought something was wrong with the loco but discovered it is a power hog. I do not know what the minimum watts needed are but it runs great with big transformers.
I am 46 and got back in in the early 1990's. I interviewed several hobby shops/train stores and they all were coming off of a bad few years with MTH locos reliability and MTH's inability to support repairs/service. All recomended Lionel so I went with Lionel. I have no opinion (good or bad) concerning MTH, I just get all my needs met with lionel and my hobby shops/train stores still recomend Lionel over MTH because of service support and those batteries.
Mine is also TMCC running in transformer mode. My Polar Express only smokes from the stack. I love this locomotive and was already thinking about getting more. I also have the traditional size K4 in TMCC and I love that also. Jim
Now if they can settle on a uniform digital control format we would all be better off. Jim
Recieved the Lionel PRR Mikado Jr. over the Holliday season and loved it right out of the box. However, there is smoke coming out of the cylnders in front of the drive rods. There is plenty of smoke coming out of the stack but also the cylnders. It looks pretty realistic like steam but I don't believe Lionel meant for the smoke unit to also push smoke out the sides of the locomotive. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thanks, Jim
I try to read my CTT magizine cover-to-cover but I never get through Mr. Polumbo's article. He never makes sense to me nor is he interesting. I often wonder why the magizine carries a piece by him at all. Jim
Mine is from the Pennsy Fast Frieght set breakup I believe. So this does not need repaired it just is-what-it-is? I kind of like it as long as no damage is being done, looks cool, adds some realism. Jim
Hi Lee, thanks for getting back to me. I can't figure out how to program the 3 positon directional unit so that it goes in both directions with nuetral in the middle? Also, this one was sitting on the shelf and I do not think that it ever ran. Where should I oil? Any help will be appreciated. Jim
Just picked up a Kline GG1 for $70 works good but came without box or owners manual. Do any of you guys have this loco? I would gladly pay some small amount if someone would copy the manual and send it to me. or an electronic scan. Thanks, Jim
