Cannot reply normally -without duplicating. Proto 2000 wheelsets are probably the most popular because they're the cheapest.(I find eccentric axle points produce unrealistic 'wobble') so I don't use (Real freight cars.. may sway. but HO cars 'wobble'). 1. Metal axles rotating in Delrin (slippery plastic) ROLLS the bes,t, so smooth polished . axle points and the sideframe plastic produces best rrolling results. 2.. Wheels are either stamped or machined on a Lathe cut (better
1. the KD C oupler box may work better than Walthers''. (It may not )- Test to see. I also use a dab of KD's 'Grease-em.'. 2. #5 has more. 'Gathering'' surface (good) - Between cars, one does not see the couplers,. and Whisker trpe' are more expen$ive.than 5's. 3. I prefer closer coupling (and have 26"r. curves) so put #43s onb ack end annd #46s on front .(#33//36s also good.alternative - Plastic, but equal swing to both sides going through #6 Xovers)
OLD ATHEARN (Bue Box) cars had low molded -on couplerr boxes so replacing them with Kadee's brought them up to NMRA height. Only those with ALL Athearn equipment thought.competative brands were off,, so Kadee brought out the # 205 gauge
Start with one car being a 'transition' car with Kadee's on one end...Most Old cars will take th #5, whcih is available in bulk , for savings.. http://www.kadee.com/htmbord/page11.htm All knuckle couplers depend on 'hadshake' and the larger #5 couplers have more 'grip -, plus you cannot see them between cars.' I prefer Short #43's on loco fronts, and so called 'scale'couplers on 'my tail' cars.for better appearance.
I use. IT'S INSURANCE. for difficult areas to reach - such as inside tunnels. They come in different shapes & sizes...
Bluish-white LED's don't look right on models emulating Tungsten headlamps. that's why I use 1.5 v. grain-of rice bulbs with diodes to drop the voltage. They readily fit into a diesel's molded holes and low milliamps don't distort the plastic..... Lights come on before starting and maintain constant brightness regardless of throttle setting.... Lifetime of LED's is greatly eggagurated (they readily burn out), and the color temp is all wrong .
Conventional wisdom is that McHenry's are cheaper imitations of the Kadee coupler - how 'good' , is arguable.. Kadee;s come in 3 lengths, oversets & undersets, plus 3 different centering designs,.and are currently the most depedable.. If you are going to spend money on a coupler, why get an imitation? Kadee's are only .75 cents each ($1.25 tops). How cheap can you be?. ALL ''knuckle'' couplers require vertical 'handshake for reliable operation.. I like the
'SD's (Special Duty) were given to EMD's 12 wheeled Diesels . ''RSD''(Road Switcher Diesel) was used by ALCO' for their 12 wheeled unitits. The "Alligator".was an unofficial nickname given to the chopped nose version, since most early Road Diesels of the period were delivered with high hoods.. CU-KEN: Your sie-by-side comparison was excellent, but I (for one) would have liked to know how it took your 18" radius curve or #4 switches, ( not all 12 wheeled
