What is shorting out? What type of locos are you running? Which DCC system? Which decoders? What brand of turnouts are you using? Did you have these issues with DC? Is your track clean? Is your track in gauge? Are you wheels in gauge? .....need input. David B
Black? Is that flat Black? What happened to Brunswick green? FWIW, decals wont adhere properly to a flat Black finish.....if at all. David B
One thing never discussed about DCC, is the fact that if the company that makes your system goes out of business, some or all of your under layout infrastructure (base unit, throttles, wireless throttles, wireless throttle receivers, reversers, etc) could become obsolete. The up side is your decoders in your locos would be compatible with what ever new DCC system you replace it with. And, decoders can be the biggest part of a DCC system investment (that is part of what kept me with DC). Not

Thats funny, I have never heard of a DCC company going under.
And let's not forget Wangrow - System One Granted people who bought that lucked out since it shared design with NEC, but fact is they are out of business.
Reversing units are not DCC system specific.
I did clearly say "some" and "may" "....become obsolite". Gee, two is a
Actually, the Tsunami has hyperdrive, not an official BEMF, and it has to be set up properly. Out of the box, it is set up generically and is not self-setting. Most Digitrax decoders have BEMF, only the DH123x does not (in terms of current offerings). Even the DZ123(5) has BEMF. You slow speed response more to do with the model the decoder is in and less to do with the decoder. David B
Bad experience? Absolutely. As a professional installer, I had a customer trying to do exactly what you are doing. He insisted that it would work, but I tried telling him that he would be giving up reliability with the installs...he didn't.care..he wanted sound in his steamers. I sourced out micro speakers for the installs. He was not happy that his loco and track required constant cleaning to support the mods needed in his locos. Of course, it was my fault (even though I warned him) and I had

Actually, the Tsunami has hyperdrive, not an official BEMF...
I'm not sure what you mean by this statement, but Tsunami certainly does have Bemf . From page 47 of the Tsunami Diesel Sound User’s Guide:
Tsunami’s Hyperdrive system features high-frequency PWM drive for silent motor control along with load compensation (or back-emf) to improve low speed operation and maintain constant speed regardless of changes
i would like to keep the digitraxx decoder but does anyone have any ideas how to get it to move the loco on speed step 1 i think that this is the main part of the problem. has anyone heard of any other decoders with the same issue?
You need to adjust CV2 until it will move at speed step one. I have seen Athearn values from 20-80 for CV2. David B
You are overlooking the need for a cap....caps take up lots of space. Also, your N scale steamer relys on the power pickups of the tender for reliable operation. Removing tender weight and replacing it with decoder weight does NOT help the situation at all. I suggest to you to have a decoder in your loco and have a sound only decoder underneath your layout for sounds (connected to it's own speaker). Give them the same address and then lock the decoders. David B
A micro Tsunami will fit into those tenders, but you are giving up lots of reliability. It can be done, but the results are not worth the expence and time. David B
