Brian, the closest thing that I’ve been to is my LHS. O.K. it’s a large nursery, Walter Anderson http://www.walterandersen.com/ . Around their layout, they have miniature/dwarf trees and ground cover appropriate for LS layouts. They also allow customers to run their own trains on the layout, by appointment. I have a vid on YouTube (001pudder), titled WAN.
SP: The way I built the mountain/water fall, the only time you can see the air gap is when you are standing at and looking down upon the trolley station at the top of the bridge. I didn’t plan it that way, just got lucky I guess. I did plan the fence for access for maintenance.
Windows, people doors, clearstory roof windows. Freight doors (as on baggage cars) are much "easier" to make than people doors, much less detail. Solid plank walls with no (or very few) windows are quicker than carving all the window detail.
Two good sources for strip wood: Any craft supply store, package of 200(?) approx. 1/64" x 3/8" x 5" for around $1.00 or so. Second option, grocery store, coffee section, wooden coffee stirrers, 500 (?) (Smaller than above but longer) for about $2.50. Scribed wood, several vendors advertise in the magazine. All provide a web address.
ttrigg I see in your picture your mountain is against a fence. What precautions have you taken so the fence doesn't rot with the dirt against it? Or the weight from leaning it over?
Step 1. Fence is built using screws (spaced for direct access about 2 inches "above" the ridgeline of mountain), so that the two end planks can be pulled off. Then slip over to other side of fence, pull the 2 screws out of both ends of the two 2x4s and the whole
Jersey: Just chiming in to echo Vic’s comments. I have no experience with the “little hex head” joiner, but have heard it makes good electrical contact, just hard to remove. Rail clamps are most assuredly well worth their cost. They provide both excellent mechanical and electrical connections. The two main brand names are “Hillman” and Split Jaw” and there is a simpler and more economical new comer (sorry, don’t recall the name) out there, have not used it but the design is simple and should work
Ray: Please be advised, I have it on solid scuttlebutt that a "North County" neighbor is training a platoon of Papillions to retreive "little people". (Papillion = 3 pounds of fur and bark, and, yes they bounce when they bark) I have acquired a picture of the Platoon Leader and the Platoon Sergeant.
Hope you are building a photographic record while building these characters to share with us neofites.

Excellent artisanship my friend. That “tree(?)” behind Mr. Rabbit, is it real, or another piece of your artwork?
I made it. It's supposed to be the "skeleton" of a dead cholla cactus.
I thought I recognized it, but it seemed a bit "short" to have been crafted by Mother Nature. I could not make up my mind whether it was stunted growth or you had raided a coral reef, which I doubt you ever would
Please allow me to paraphrase that old Memorex audio tape commercial. Is it real, or is it Ray?
