Well said, Lee... Although I do like David B's response! Be careful, though... Each step toward realism begets the next. I've recently gone through that as I move into finer-scale rail and low-profile metal wheelsets. It's all a good thing though, for while it's hard on the wallet, improving what you have is less expensive than starting anew. Long story short, Rapidos look and operate less like real couplers than knuckle (obviously) and once you replace them you've started on
An inexplicable compulsive need...

Another thing I'd add to the comparison in the MASSIVELY COLOSSAL Conrail merger.
Forgot about that one. Of course, that was a government merger to save Penn Central and all the other failing new england lines (New haven comes to mind). But still a huge merger.
I'm going to go ahead and be "that guy..." You know, the know-it-all that no one likes because he corrects people on minor points... But
Yes, this is a real shame from the standpoint of history and tradition. I built quite a few myself as a kid. Moreover, it will mean that at some future time it will be a lot more expensive to flesh out a large operating fleet in HO once the tens of thousands of Blue Box kits already in stores and at swap meet tables are picked through. Honestly, though, compared to the newer ready-to-run cars (thinking Kadee, Exact Rail, Atlas, Athearn's Genesis, etc.), most of these well-worn Blue Box kits look
I don't get a sense that the OP was looking to tear open the age-old perceived-yet-non-existent rift between the so-called "craftsman" and the so-called "RTR crowd." These are useless labels that people throw around in arguments that have no point. Rather I think the OP was elucidating his frustration at some people's denouncements of top-quality hobby products as poor or beneath them. I'm sorry, I have to agree. I can give manufacturers as much guff as any when it
Dave youv'e created a train nuts dream house. Den.
There are tons of houses lining the old PRR Middle Division in nearly every town it ran through. Marysville, Duncannon, Newport, Mifflin, Lewistown, McVeytown, etc., etc., all have houses right next to these busy tracks. I'd love to have one some day as long as gainful employment is available nearby.
Atlantic Central; very well put. I agree 100%. Sometimes it takes a little work to have everything you've ever wanted.
Just picked up Athearn's new bay window caboose in N. I haven't detailed or weathered it yet, but from the box it's a very nice model. Freestanding grabs are great even in N.
Okay, finished up the corner scene on my Enola Yard extension of the Juniata Division. Lotsa pics. That cinder lot is presumably from a business next door to the house. The glue is still very wet in these scenes, so the haze & sheen is wet matte medium. You can see PennDot has been trying to fix potholes on US 11/15.
Bill, I may eventually add a garage, but some of the houses along there don't have any: http://www.bing.com/maps/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=qqg5p58kp7q6&style=b&lvl=1&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&scene=22796805&encType=1
