Buy a $2.00 Bachmann,LifeLike or TYCO boxcar or hopper at a trainshow, body mount some knuckles maybe replace the stirrups possibly repaint or at least weather it and then enjoy the hell out opf watching your car go around on the layout. Sounds like a lot of fun to me.
Using the foamcore to build a viaduct type of bridge to my way of thinking would give you an extremely strong structure.I am asuming here that what you are planning would actually be an enclosed box structure.with the tracks running on top of it.The only problem I can foresee is curving the foamcore for the insides of the arches. I think you should go for it and post your progress pictures on the appropiate forum(s)
Ulrich, do you have any idea how small Z scale is? This layout sets in the window of a Z scale hobbyshop and actually goes around. Personally I think David did a very nice job of representing a model train on a tiny layout. But if you can do better?
We are fortunate in that we have 4 hobbyshops in our metro area.I tend to spend the bulk of my hobby money with them. There are times when I will order online but the one rule that governs my online purchases is that the "shop" I am ordering from must be a real B&M shop with a real street address. Sometimes that great discount you get online disappears with the shipping charges some shops charge.
The concrete ties on PECO track is very much US prototype right down to the tie contours and the Pandrol tie clips.
[Quote] Why are they called uboats? [Unquote] The u in uboat stands for Universal Series which is what GE called this seriers of locos
I happen to agree with the OP. Though my reason for no longer subscribing is that it gives me another reason to visit my LHS's. As for the subscriber content only on the website I think that is a total rip off because even though I no linger subscribe I still pay hard earned cash for the magizine.
For the couplers MTL 1015 or what ever they call it now. For the wheel sets you might try Northwest Shortline as they at least used to advertize LifeLike replacement wheelsets
When Athearn,ATLAS,& KATO come to their senses and start painting locos and rolling stock in Grande Valley Railway colours and apply the correct lettering to said units I will stop painting my own. Until that happy day I will have derived a great deal of pleasure taking a undecorated loco or car and making it mine.
Being a Z scaler (among other scales) I can answer from my own experiences. My MTL locos will pull 15 cars.around curves 17 on straight track. They could probly pull more but my layout is 2'x4' so the curves come fast.
