Tim, The enhanced web site is great, thanks for posting the link. Since I still have family in the Maidenhead area, it is not too far to come to Bekonscot when we are visiting the UK. A couple of years ago I took my 2 boys, then 10 and 8 and they enjoyed it every bit as much as I did when I was their age. You and the staff have done an amazing job of keeping the place looking good over the years.
The track and turnouts are "Atlas", the DCC is Digitrax, I have not even been able to run a single Loco. The system shuts down as soon as it beeps 5 times, which in the manual means a short in the track.
If it does this when there are no locos or rolling stock on the layout, then clearly there is a fault somewhere in the wiring. Make sure you take everything off the track to eliminate the possibility that it is a rolling stock issue. Then you are
Homer, One thing I did when wiring my layout was to make a very simple buzzer circuit from parts picked up at Radio Shack. A pair of aligator clips to connect to the tacks and then a buzzer and battery in series. As soon as you wire something that makes a short, current flows and the buzzer goes off. It can save a lot of heartache!
No need to cross the pond, right near me in Strasburg there is also a working in-steam Thomas: http://www.strasburgrailroad.com/day-out-with-thomas-faq.php He also runs on other tourist roads periodically, anywhere they can get a truck to carry him. --Randy
Randy, that is great. Every Thomas I have seen in the US was a dummy with a real loco, usually a diesel switcher not very subtly placed on the back of the train providing the power.
Great Photos Simon, Thanks for sharing with us! Is there another Craftsman Structure Show Scheduled for 2010? Thanks Steve
Thanks Steve, yes at the awards banquet at the show they mentioned that there was going to be another in 2010. I expect that it will be a similar time, so one of the first weeks in November. Since the show is held at a hotel really close to Foxboro, they try to arrange it so that it does not clash with a Patriots home game. I don't
Seems uncle Harrie came over while we where out and took the train set and sold it.
Ken, you uncle was a claire-voyant and could see the future. He could see that your train was heading towards 12000 hours of continuous operation and was headed for a smokey demise. He was just trying to shield you from the pain of fried electrical parts. But as we now know, all too painfully, your path led you back to model trains and the pain of the smoky demise later in life
You asked for it Ken! In the US the traditional story is Lionel for Christmas as a kid. Lose interest in trains in the teenage years to run around with fast cars, and fast women (at least that is what you prayed for ) then along comes a house, family and kids and then in later life returning to the hobby. I grew up in England, so for me it was a Christmas present that comprised a Traing Minic OO scale road rail set. I still have the loco http://www.tri-ang.co.uk/OO/docks.html an example of which
Tom, actually no. I attended so called Premium workshops on Wednesday. These were clinics of just 20 modellers covering specific subjects such as roof treatments, walls and stonework, rock carving, water and detail painting. Then on Thursday to Saturday there were a series of presentations in a larger auditorium. Sunday was for layout tours, which I sadly could not attend. There was a vendor show and contest room running the latter 3 days of the event.
Yeah I agree ....a nice scenic layout that is not full of clutter like the F&SM.
Zing!!!!! Heads down, incoming....... Funny how those initials stir the pot everytime they are uttered. Since you are clearly a fan of this type of thing, here is a photo just for you..... Before getting too worked up about it, I should point out that it is O scale. However, I would agree that the FS&M is not everyones cup-of-tea, but would suggest that it is one of
Did you glean a lot of good tips and ideas from the modeling "mensas"?
I did indeed. When I got home on Sunday afternoon, my 10 year old was all excited as he has to make an Indian diorama showing a plains Indian camp. So my new found rock carving and water techniques were immediately used as I taught Christopher what to do to make his diorama. I just looked at the link Scotty posted for the 2010 edition and if you don't blink, I am in the video
