If you put a cotton thead thru the spring, if it shoots off, you will not lose it, once in place it is simple to pull the thread out, job done.
I do not seem to have any trouble with my six Annies/Big Hauler locomotives, derailment of the pony truck is extremely rare, I am using a mix of Aristocraft and LGB turnouts, I do think it is important to have level trackwork for any loco to run smoothly, with a bit more track maintainance one should not have these problems.
I have an original Delton Rogers 2-4-2, purchased on e-bay, never given me one ounce of trouble, and it must be over 20 years old.
Refer Gear Driven Steam's attached photos, the lower one is of the Foden locomotive on the Beaudesert Shire Tramway, south of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia. This line closed in 1944.
My first train run on an operatiung day, is always an LGB loco hauling my Aristo Track Cleaning car, the pick up skates on the LGB loco assist in cleaning the rails.
I have standarised on the Bachmann Knuckle Coupler for my entire fleet of cars and locomotives, some 80 items, Economy was my original purpose, however I have found them to be an excellent product, and the only retro fitted coupling which goes straight onto all Aristocraft, USA Trains and LGB US equipment. USA Trains supply a knuckle coupling which requires cutting their coupling mount to fit, however the Bachmann Knuckle just screws straight onto the original mount, as it does with LGB and Aristocraft
Do not jump in too soon to scrap the Bachmann Knuckler Coupler, like JD I have standardised on these for all my equipment, I have over 60 cars and 20 locomotives, all fitted with the Bachmann Knuckle Coupler, virtually trouble free operation. Worth perservering with, as you bought this train secondhand, a little bit of maintenance may be needed. You will find as you purchasse other manufacturers equipment, that the Bachmann Knuckle Coupler will retrofit all other makes including Aristocraft, LGB
Being in NJ you would not experience heat wave conditions, but we in the sub-tropics do, and the hot rails will actually melt plastic off the plastic wheels, so the first thing I do with any new rolling stock is put metal wheels on, they run better, make a nick clicky noise on rail joints, and do not melt onto the rail head. Thankfully Bachmann rolling stock only come with metal wheels fitted.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, and Happy Garden Railroading in 2008.
I have used Sierra Sound Units in my locomotives, purchased from Gauge One Gallery in Sydney, where in Oz are you, I am in Brisbane, Queensland. Sierra units are very simple to fit.
