BNSF traffic St Louis-Hannibal MO

On a recent vacation trip from St Charles MO to Hannibal MO drove along the BNSF interesting to seeing all the signals built up on pillars. Rail traffic was not that bad seen  a ballast train, rail train coal train and what appeard to be a way freight at Hannibal.  What traffic moves on this line and where does it originate,  Also we were stopped by the sperry rail car on the crossing of hwy 79 and the KCS.  Brought the memory of the "doodle bug" trip that was in the trains magizine years back. One other question how far NS travel on the BNSF at Hannibal?

Here is a link to the BNSF map http://www.bnsf.com/tools/reference/division_maps/?menu=5&submenu=0 . W Quincy Mo is where most of its traffic comes from going south.

Most of the traffic is Manifest trains.GalMem MemGal are the main ones I remember ( UGH I HATED THESE!!!!)Some coal trains, grain trains and of course locals.

In the summer I enjoy sitting at Clarksville Lock and Dam and seeing the different freights roll through while watching the river glide by.

Re: BNSF traffic St Louis-Hannibal MO

Most tonnage over the Hannibal Sub is PRB coal. This is what basically keeps this trk active. There are several manifest jobs which go to and from Galesburgh.A Couple locals working from W Quincy plus W Quicny yd is worked by a crew each shift around the clock. All trains are worked by crews from W Quincy w/ both xtra bd and pool turns active. I worked the brkmn xtra bd there a couple months in 2002 and believe me this has to be the most scenic route going south from Quincy-St.Louis. Going north to Burlington isn't bad either as the trk follows the river.
