Power plants pics please.
Posted by AltoonaRailroader on Saturday, February 7, 2009 2:15 PM

Hello everyone, I'm in a creative pickle here and I'd like to ask everyone a giant favor. Would you all post some pics of your power plants? I've got my track down and my pit dug, I just need some inspiration on how to work on this part of my layout that's been keeping me from moving forward. That and I think I need some supplies, a trip the LHS is happening tomorrow. Yeah!!

Thanks, truely appreciate the people and talent on this board.

No power plant pics yet.  I have some GREAT pictures of a great model-- which i can't find.  Day sleeper stepson is in room where I keep train stuff, and I can only look late at night when he goes to flip burgers.  I tried 45 minutes last night and couldn't find them.

I would think LOTS of people have power plants on their layout.  I will upload a semi-good picture to my railimages account and post it....

Here is a web address to The Alliant Energy Nelson Dewey Generating Station that I worked at a few years ago;  http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4006879065880497525&pr=goog-sl

It is a good over view of the plant and the surroundings and the fuel handling system, however they bring the coal in by barge but you can use it for inspiration.

Coal coming in by train is unloaded in either a bottom dumper or a rotary dumper and both are housed in a building to help contain the dust, then it is conveyed either under ground or above to the pile and then from the pile to either a pre crusher house or to the plant were it is put in to silos until it is ran through a pulverizer and then in to the boiler.

Hope that this helps.

This one (Walthers Cornerstone kit) is on sale right now:

This is another kit with a more modern look.  It's not on sale:

Thanks Mister B.

The first one is the one I have. I like the building and even got the interior for it and I'm going to light it up once I get new windows for it. I think I'll take a different approach to this thread and post some pics of my configuration and ask for idea's and advice. Man, I've been stumped.

This is a good thread for me, as I'm also in the planning stages for a loads-in, emptys-out scheme for a power plant and mine.  I'm interested in C&O Fan Terry's track plan, and any others that wish to post.  My challenge is to figure out a way to get the 1st gen diesels off the front of the train, so they (or maybe a yard goat) can push the train into place.  Have to put the caboose somewhere too, and reverse the process when a train is ready to be pulled out of the mine / powerplant.

My scerario is the New River Mine and TBD power plant about 4.5 feet apart, separated by a wooded hill hiding a turnback loop for a future peninsula (I hope).  The current track plan calls for 2 load / unload tracks and a parallel "mainline", that will support as a continuous loop until the layout is expanded.  The "mainline" may be able to provide runaround capability as well, but I want to be able to do all the switching on one side of the scenic divider, not having locos going into or out of a "black hole".

I'd love to see track plans for other loads-in, empties-out schemes, and hear how more experienced modelers handled the runaround and where-to-put-the-caboose situations.

Thanks,

Bill (onebiglizard)

Here is my power plant.  It is scratch built and part of my mine scene.  It is based on a prototype structure that still stands next to the remains of the mine I am modelling. It was coal fed directly by the mine.

It is a relief structure against the backdrop.  Not enough space for the whole thing.

In this slightly closer shot you can see that the large steam generator is implied by some web images placed strategically.

HO model built ca 1990.  Based on a 2" square photo of a real power plant in South Texas.  The plant was actually natural gas fired, but I adapted the model for coal.

A track ran UNDER part of the structure, with a hopper that lead down into the boiler.  That was my own modification of the design to make it coal-fired, so we could run hoppers to it.  The car dump pit was right under the structure.  Propobably not very prototype,
