I have been using Dcoder Pro on an old Windows 98 PC with a Digitrax MS-100. It works great.
I am missing something in this thread. Since you do not connect to a layout, what do you use for Decoder Pro to connect to the decoder you are programming?

Without the connection to the layout, how is the programing passed to the decoder?

I believe the idea behind this thread is to use DecoderPro to calculate the CV values and then you program them manually using your DCC controller. This saves you the trouble of calculating the values by hand, and gives you a convenient way to store the settings.

Re: Tutorial: Using Decoder Pro WITHOUT a connection to your layout. PHOTO-INTENSIVE
Sorry David but after the 3rd search I find it's not listed and I'm using the latest 'production' version of the program. But that's ok, I certainly appreciate your help and the tutorial you've put together. JaRRell davidmbedard wrote: | jacon12 wrote: | | David, thank you for putting this little tutorial together. I have a couple of questions for you if you don't mind. I realize you HAVE to select the decoder type you're working with first of all. What do you do if you have a ... say... Bachmann Spectrum with a Tsunami decoder installed and it isn't listed in Decoder Pros list of decoders? Second, I'm going through a Digitrax Zephyr to program the Tsunami, and I've had good luck in the past programing address and some other changes, but I've heard that the Zephyr may not me 'strong' enough to do it. Have you ever heard this or know it is or isn't a fact? Thanks, JaRRell |

The Bachmann Sound deocder is either listed with the Tsunami section or the Bachmann section....its there.... I have demoed with the Zephyr system and it worked just fine (in front of 9 people). David B |

In my version 1.8: --------------------------------------------------------- Throttle Up (Soundtraxx) DSD Diesel DSD Steam DXS Diesel DXS Steam LC Diesel > 100 LC LC Diesel PNP CAB unit > LL 100LC LC Diesel PNP > AT 100LC/ KT 100LC, LL110LC Diesel, LL 090LC Diesel LC Diesel PNP + FX > C628 LC Diesel LC Steam > 100LC Steam LC Steam Hyperlight > 090LC Diesel LC Steam PNP > B280LC Steam, B3TSLC Steam, B210LC Steam, LL 080LC Steam SHS Diesel ------------------------------ and that's the complete listing with everything that's found in sub folders also. Anyway, I thank you for your time and patience! :) Jarrell davidmbedard wrote: | | Its under ...... Throttle up (Soundtraxx) Tsunami Steam Tsunami Bachmann OEM David B |

David if he's opened all the sub folders then Tsunami steam is probably off the bottom of the page and he just hasn't scrolled down far enough

Re: Tutorial: Using Decoder Pro WITHOUT a connection to your layout. PHOTO-INTENSIVE
I couldn't figure out what was going on. I rechecked, for the 5th time, my laptop, which is the computer in use in the trainroom, and there was no entry for the Tsunami. None, nada, zip! So I downloaded Decoder Pro to the main computer, the one I'm using now, and the entry was there. Hmmmm... So I went back to the trainroom and completely removed the program from the computer and downloaded it again. This time the entry was right where it should be. Same program version as before. I can only guess that the Tsunami file didn't make it on the original download but that sure seems far fetched. I don't know what happened. Thankfully there were only about 3 locomotives that had been entered into the program before deleting it and that won't be hard to redo. I appreciate your time and patience! Re: Tutorial: Using Decoder Pro WITHOUT a connection to your layout. PHOTO-INTENSIVE
have downloaded Decoder Pro to my main computer in the house and it works well. however when transferred to my old W98 computer in the train room I can`t get it to work because the java version won`t work on the old computer. have tried the java site and can`t download an earlier version. any help on how to get the earlier version ? as there is no connection between layout and computer it doesn`t really matter much but would still like to get it working thanks trevor

There are alot of help FAQs on the JMRI website. Unfortunately, without being at your computer I cannot diagnose your issues. David B

| I only have one computer and it's in another room so i made up a 35 ft cable to go from one room to the other Works Fine ! |
|
That's great too. But my train room is in a detached building over 200 ft. from my main computer in the house. If i wanted to use my home computer, i'd have to run the cable out the window, thru the flower bed, across the lawn, across a sidewalk, thru the train room door in the detached building, across the train room floor, up the benchwork and into the fascia plate, connecting it to loconet. No sir, it was a lot easier to take the old computer, download decoderpro to it, take it to the train room and keep it there.... chuck

Buy a cheap old computer at goodwill, or a yard sale. Set up a Draft N wireless network. It will reach that far.

I don't need a wireless connection . All i did was hook up an old computer that a friend of mine gave me to the internet in the house, downloaded java and decoderpro, took the old computer to the train room building, and wahlaa!...I have decoderpro connected directly to my loconet programming track with locobuffer II and it works just fine.
