My first weathering attempt

Hi guys!

Just want to show a couple of pictures of my first weathering attempt. I know that I have a lot to learn.

The car have been used many years in coal service...

I like it. You have managed to kill the shine of the car (don't worry that's a good thing) and make that thing look well used. My cars look like I scrubed them clean.

Nice job, Electro!  What did you end up using?  I have a hopper that I used an alcohol/Pollyscale rust mix ratio and applied with downward strokes of a broad brush.

Make sure you don't weather ALL your cars the same degree.  A mixture of "dirtyness" will look more natural.

I think it looks great. It shows you took the time to do it right instead of rushing through it.

I think it's a great start

Re: My first weathering attempt

That's a great job!  What I've discovered in looking at many, many photos in railroad books is that just about anything goes when it comes to weathering.  I'd like to suggest that you develop several different approaches as you go forward....acrylics, Bragdon weathering powders, etc. so you don't end up with all your cars looking like they experienced the exact same dust, dirt, elements, chemicals, etc.  As I'm telling you this, I'm reminding myself that I've been weathering too many cars with Bragdon weathering powders and it's time to do some with acrylics, alcohol/india ink, etc.

Keep up the good work.

Mondo

Look's real good.  I think you might wanna add some black to the side's of the car.  It look's good and maybe the black will make it look like it has been used for year's.  Like from coal dust for the mine, or just off of the load.  Great job!!!

Re: My first weathering attempt

Nice, nice job! Looks like its been weather beaten for quite some time. Some touching up with a coal black overspray might set off the apperance of coal dust that has settled on the hopper, but its very nice as is. Great job!

Re: My first weathering attempt

I'm impressed! Quite believable to me.

Mondo, excellent suggestion to use various approaches on different cars, etc. That's very sound advice.

Oh, almost train show time. Have a nice night all. Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

Re: My first weathering attempt

The weathering is done with AIM weathering powders, nothing else.

The rockface is Bragdon Enterprices rock molds, many different molds blended together.

Thanks guys for all your comments, makes me feel like I have a future in this hobby...
