Painting Brass Locomotives

What is the concensus of opinion- Is it necessary to prime brass before applying the colour coats when painting brass locos? I use floquil paints and have an Aztec airbrush.

Which primer is recommended?

Many thanks

Philip

Re: Painting Brass Locomotives

If using the Regular Floquil paint (Not Polly S) I would use either the Oxide or Gray Primer before painting with your color coats.

My new preference for painting brass is Scalecoat I, as it does not need a primer, it bakes on well and has a gloss finish which is great for decaling.

Most brass that isn't "factory painted", at least nowadays, has had a coat of clear lacquer or brass-coloured paint (sometimes both) applied.  This prevents the brass from tarnishing and also hides the solder used to assemble the model.  I've painted brass using Floquil's grey primer and also right on the factory finish, with no additional primer, both for Floquil and Scalecoat paints.

Re: Painting Brass Locomotives

If it has a very good smooth coat of laquer, clear or otherwise, I will paint right over it.  If I strip to bare brass, I do prime when using Floquil, us ually with Floquil gray.  More and more I find myself going to the Testors, Model Master, or Scalecoat II lines and no primer for everything.  I have been satisfied with the results.
