Toy train operating and collecting

Can't recall where I read something about a manufacturing flaw in this loco regarding armature play or bearings or something of that nature.  Does anyone know of this?  My 783 runs great, but don't want to be doing harm if modification is needed.  Some folks have never heard anything about this malady, but I'm pretty sure I read about it in either CTT or OGR.  I think the fix was to add a spacer somewhere in the drive train or motor.

According to my Greenberg Guide 1970-1991 Vol 1, it's more of a design flaw not a defect, probably caused by some cost cutter at MPC. Unlike earlier scale Hudsons,  Lionel only used one set of ball bearings and 1 c-clip on one end the motor shaft on the 783. This allowed too much play, supposedly causing the armature to bind.  This was fixed with the grey 785 Hudson by using 2 bearings and 2 c-clips on the armature. You would need a new 2 slotted armature and another set of bearings to upgrade an older version, but since yours runs fine I wouldn't worry.

I talked to a local authorized Lionel (long time) repair person that said Lionel never issued any kind of service advisement with regards to the 783, and said he's never had any repairs in this regard.  The plot thickens!  Can't wait till Wednesday to call in to Lionel service about getting a replacement armature and clips.  Mine runs great, but it's new old stock.  The S.O.S never worked, which is a good thing, cause in my opinon the last "S" does not stand for Steam!  Only problem is the horn doen't work either.  I guess through all my back issues of CTT and OGR cause I'm sure I read something about this in one of the two that I can at least show the guy.  It's hard to believe Lionel will not acknowledge they produced a defective product and won't make it right.
