Teen Model Railroader Place -Summer 2010-
Posted by WCfan on Sunday, June 6, 2010 12:15 PM

Well I think it's time for a new place. I think it's summer when the average temperature for Wisconsin is over 80!

Sorry I don't have anything to post! Also, welcome all new members I have missed, and welcome back all returning members!

Good Afternoon Vietnam, er, Teen Model Railroader Place. Mother Nature in Illinois is bipolar, one minute, it's raining like a cow peeing on a flat rock, next, sunny, beautiful, and 80 degree. On a different note, Anyone heard about HO scale garden railways? I saw a video about them on YouTube, looks fairly easy. I've done some construction work, so nothing I'm not used to.

If you can read this... thank a teacher. If you are reading this in english... thank a veteran

When in doubt. grab a hammer.

hi everyone

some of you don't know me because i  just joined. and  i havent ben on for a couple weeks Sad. ive been keeking busy auctuall working on my layout in stead of pecking on the keyboard but i running out of supplies so i decided to come back.

yes ive heard about HO scale railroads, ya there eaasy to fund but not easy to maintain and especally for HO scale. come on a simple leafe will derail a train plus most premade tracks would rust in a month a week if it rains heavly. HO garden railroads are not perminint it would be easer to just pay the extra $2000 and get a  g scale railroad that might last a year. i got to say i've visited some g scale railroads here in florida and there main fear is frost because it messes with the placement of the tracks and i'm here in florida. HO scale garden railroads arn't worth it . never in a million yearsSign - Dots

hey if it is worth it keep it ... ...if it is perfict its not yours... but still dont take it for granted

Hey Everyone,

Nothing much still planning my new railroad.

Sawyer, Ya I know, I'm thinking about getting maybe a gp7 and like a small switcher and then like a gp50. Not sure yet though, I may just stay with Ho but who knows.

WCfan, Ya I know, I didn't go on here for a long time. Got busy and kept saying I would and then bam, totally forgot about it. And then wasn't sure if I should come back or not.

And 80 sounds nice, its in the 100s here. It sucks in AZ right now.

Oh and how did you guys get a link to your website on the bottom.

Thanks,

Taylor

Taylor, good luck with finding a good GP50. there's the run Kato made back in like the 80's or 90's, and then there's bachmann POS $35 standard line. I've often wondered about taking like an Atlas GP38-2 or GP40-2 since they had those locos I know for sure had the same frame as the GP50 in real life, getting the bachmann model, and using BLMA parts and some other manufacturers for what BLMA doesn't have and build a nice-looking model that runs like it should. I would have to use the Atlas donor loco's pilots though, as bachmann just has the huge rectangular opening for the truck-mounted crapido coupler >.

Hey Everyone,

Welcome guys and congrats!

Sawyer, thanks for the info and maybe I will get like 2-3 gp15s since those came out alittle while ago and I dont really care which gp series it is since they all are practically the same and will look good o a shortline railroad.

Im Back!!!! Like I said, I have a new DCC system. I am now able to run trains again!!! Well, because I can now run trains, I have commissioned my personal electrician (dad) to drop another feeder, solder some joints, and widen a flange way. I got the shay hooked up with some cars and ran the reopening special! Here are some pics.

Bye

Post Scriptum: Dont let the blur in the photos fool you into actually thinking the shay is moving at a fair clip.

Right now i have a temporarry layout on a 4 by 7 board with brass track. But i was thinking about using EZ-Track. Has anyone used that and balasted it and got good results?

Hey Everyone,

Sawyer, I have been thinking and I may just stivk with HO scale. There is a lot of options and I have dealt with it for a few years so thats good. But who knows, I may have a sudden change of heart. Smile

Cdog565(hope I spelled that right)

I use HO bachmann track right now and I like it. It came in the trainset I got from walthers and it is very easy to use. Mine is not ballasted though, just straight on the ground foam.

Hello everyone, I use E-Z track and it works fine for me. Well i have a 3 track yard now and if anyone has seen my youtube vid im now thinking of getting rid of my hill. Im having trouble keeping trains coupled as they go up and it turns into a runaway train with no engine. I will remake the hill but with no garde. I will have pics soon.

Taylor, when you look at your layout and think about having twice the railroad in the same space, n scale is the best :D cdog565, bachmann track is pretty good, just solder the joiners and use feeder wires.

Everyone's back! Woohoo! Cool

Before leaving for Vermont for the weekend, I was down in the basement for an afternoon shooting. Here's some photos.

I'm also working on the WRS website, expanding the Operations page to include more detailed description of each regularly schedule train.

Tyler, sweet shots. Well, here's some pics of what I've been up to today. sorry for the blur, took me maybe a minute total using my cell phone, just wanted to grab some quick shots: looking down the main: The retention pond (still got a lot to do): I think I'll add this curve to the yard and have it continue onto a shelf at some point. then in the future build a sectional yard. then this yard will function only to serve the North Branch industrial district, there will be a train from the other yard (the ANRR's head yard) to the end of the line (which will be another town named Peach Creek after the town where my all-time favorite cartoon Ed Edd N Eddy was set) and will make set outs on both sides of the layout. More on the ops once I have it all thought out. N-JOY!

Welcome back to the guys that have returned!

Taylor, don't go to the dark side... If you know what's best for you... ;-)
Oh, and about the website link in the signature- go to the editing signature thingy, and put tags around the link to make it live, just as if you were putting it in a message.

And congrats to BigBlue and nfrgcs10!

And welcome nfrgcs!

BigBlue, is that the Atlas model? I saw one (4300) in a case at the LHS, and it was really nice!
If only someone could make HEP locomotives (PH-2s, 2As, 2Bs, and FH-2s), that would be great, but, unfortunately the market is probably too small...

John, glad to see you're up and running again!

cdog, I used EZT on my last layout, and didn't like it, but it's all a matter of personal choice.

Wow, Tyler, I LOVE that shot of 3243 under the bridge! (the second photo) And the last one is pretty cool too

Sawyer, I like what I'm seeing in North Branch.

----------------------------

Ok, this is both good and bad...
I have not one, but two summer jobs! Good, because it's more money (read= more trains), but bad because there's a conflict.
One job is only Saturday and Sunday, 6 hours each. The other job, he wants me every Thurs and Sunday, and every other Friday and Saturday (long story, not important). But by law, I can only do 8 hours a day. Th and F are fine, but Sat and Sun will be problems... I'll try and negotiate hours this weekend...

Joe, thanks! Well, scraped up the scenery that was drying and put some fresh turf down. the stuff that was down would have set horribly. Now for the RR Museum. I have all three pieces of rolling stock so far, still have room for another piece. Now for the new engine servicing. GP9 #3 rests during some down time in the North Branch Industrial District. Yes, that is a 2 track engine house with one track; I may add some ballast etc to look like an abandoned 2nd line, or may just leave it. GP35 #5 sits on what will be the servicing part of the spur. The ex-Rock Island boxcar in the background serves as storage. Here's a close-up of the boxcar. Then our photographer decided to go do some fishing. First the museum's C-Liner came rolling by with one of the two ANRR streamliner cars. the other car is awaiting windows. since there is no easy way to turn the observation car that was bought with both coaches, it sits on display. The C-Liner, named after a good friend (check my sig) The photographer's buddy snapped one of the coach. And finally here's one of the ANRR's U23B, ex-ATSF U23B #6330 N-JOY!

Hey Everyone,

Sawyer: Ya but I also see all the stuff I can reuse when I hopefully one day start my new layout and I will try to get some pixs up of my current layout.

Joe: Sorry its been a long time, ya I know the darkside and thanks for welcoming me back.

Tyler: Nice Pixs, wish I could model as good as that. Don't know where you learned it from.

See Man,

Thats a main reason to stay in HO scale, that and the cars I have, I have 2 good athearn models and a walthers one. Thats like 60 bucks plus about 160 in structures. LOL. Plus I can reuse my track since it is ez track and I didn't glue it down. But I will always keep that idea in my head.

Hi guys,

I've never been in the TMRP topics before, but I thought I'd stop by to say hi before I'm too old to be kicked out for good.Big Smile

It looks like a lot of you are making some pretty nice progress with your trains and layouts! I really need to get back to finishing my own, but sprinkling and gluing all that grass and ballast just takes so long! But, I've got plenty of free time for the Summer, and I'll probably have an entire side of the family around for Christmas (including toddler twins, meaning I should probably put my things away before they're around), so I'm going to try and have all of that done in the next few months.Big Smile I'll be sure to post pictures somewhere on the forum as I finish things.

Well, it's been fun spending all of 5 minutes here!Big Smile

Cdog. DONT USE PLASTIC BALLASTED TRACK IF YOU WANT TO LIVE!!!!! If you are planning to make a decent quality rr, plastic ballasted track is an option, but it is very hard to ballast and you wont like how it looks. I MADE THE MISTAKE OF DOING THIS AND I WILL FOREVER REGRET IT! Have a nice day!
