Solder Question?

Does anyone know if there is a way to solder to piano wire and if so how?

Re: Solder Question?

A little more info is needed. Is the wire stainless steel? If so than there is no way solder will work. If it is spring steel you may try brazing it. Steel will require way more heat than soldering will provide.

Re: Solder Question?

If you explain what you are trying to do, we may be able to offer suggestions on what to do. Soldering offers no mechanical strength.

Re: Solder Question?

Piano wire is tempered stainless steel.  It's very difficult to solder, and the solder won't bond to the wire; i.e., if pressure is exerted on it, it will just slip down the wire.  Even the Budd Company had trouble figuring out a way to weld stainless steel when they built the Burlington Pioneer Zephyr.
