Re: Flat Wheel Cafe/Diner, August 2009 Edition

Glad you had a good trip, Brian! Did the weather cooperate for you?

Looks like I need one more item for college: pepper spray. There have been a few incidents recently in which Creighton students have been robbed at gunpoint in the areas surrounding the campus. These have all been at night, but I know it can happen during the day too, especially when I have to walk several blocks from my car to campus. Not good.

Absolutely stunning weather here. Bright sunshine, temperatures in the lower 70s, and low humidity. It doesn't get any better than this.

Re: Flat Wheel Cafe/Diner, August 2009 Edition

Brian, very glad to hear that you and Joanie are just resting from your trip!  Also, very good to hear that you had a great time.

After just looking at my calendar, I will have to find someone to take my place signing people in for Tuesday Produce:  I noticed that I have a doctor's appointment this Tuesday morning, with our primary care doctor.

For our Sunday Dinner, I have fixed the following for you all:

1.  Spaghetti w/meat balls, garden salad, Italian bread

2.  Mild chili w/your choice of oyster crackers or regular saltine crackers and you can also select from PB&J sandwiches or grilled cheese sandwiches.  There is plenty of hot sauce, picante sauce or salsa that you can add to make your bowl as spicy hot as you prefer.

Right now, I'm on my two hour off period from wearing the new brace.  I have increased the wearing time today to an hour and a half at a time.  So far, so good:  not having any pain while wearing it, and I'm also not hitting my left ankle with it, and causing any more bruises (I did that Friday evening).

Everyone enjoy your meal, have a great evening, and take care.

CW, I'm glad to hear that you are managing O.K. with your new brace, and that you are not in any real pain or discomfort. And thanks much for preparing dinner for the rest of us tonight. I just got home from working roughly 7 hours at my other part time job, and I sure am hungry!

Since we are having spaghetti for dinner tonight, I might go ahead and email you a recipe for spaghetti sauce which has been in my family for more than a generation. The story is that when my Dad was serving in the U.S. Merchant Maritime Service (Merchant Marine) during WW II, he had a ship-board buddy who was from an Italian background. One day they had shore leave in New York City and this buddy of Dad's invited my Dad over to his folk's house for dinner, where his mother served my Dad Spaghetti. And she gave him the recipe. My Dad would later find out some years later, that this guy's father was very much involved in the Italian crime syndicate!! Spaghetti was always one of my Dad's favorite dishes, and my Mom continued to use this same recipe until she passed away in December of 2001.

Our weather here in Sioux Falls has been very nice the last two or three days. The temp here was 44 degrees when I got up this morning at 7:00 and right now we have a temp of 77 degrees.........and very low humidity. And as someone else pointed out in this same thread earlier, it doesn't get any better than this.

Ray

Re: Flat Wheel Cafe/Diner, August 2009 Edition

Our foray to Ruby Tuesday last night hit a derail, but we made it tonight. It was a 3 week late birthday supper for me, but it was worth the wait. They had a buy 1 get 1 free special, so we got the rib plate with ice cream for dessert. I just gotta do that again.... There is scuttlebutt that Ruby Tuesday will be closing some restaraunts in our area as part of an announced national belt tightening program. I sure hope this is not one of them. I can hear thunder in the distance and one of my girls is boofing back at it, so I guess we're gonna get wet again. It seems like 90% or more of the days this summer, since April actually, that we have had thunderstorms or at least seen them forecast. Man, that has gotten old! In a month or so, I can hook up the wireless and not have to race to disconnect antennas and motor cables, but right now, everything is disconnected and has been for the past month. Everybody take care and have a great week.

Our skies are crystal clear with a bright moon in the high southern sky.  I believe it will cool down quite a bit towards morning.  A few min. ago it was 65 degrees.

blhanel:

Anybody seen Mookie this morning?  Got a couple of questions for her-

1. Did you get over to your favorite spot yesterday?

2. Did you see an eastbound coal train go by with 9290 and 9231 leading, and 9288 bringing up the rear?

yes and no.  BNSF is having a major slow down - they are parking all their trains around town and off school shopping.  We have seen very little movement these past two days, except for the trail tresspassers crosing all 6 tracks and no one watching them.  Maybe they are all at the State Fair?

Saw the Nafta engine yesterday, but not much else.

Re: Flat Wheel Cafe/Diner, August 2009 Edition

The day started out OK - a fair number of passengers and fair to middlin' skies.

Until the end of the day.

One thing we have to do every now and then is dump the toilets on the cars.  Not the funnest activity, but generally not usually quite as unpleasant as it sounds (stinky, though).

Trainmaster wanted them done today, after our usual runs.  So we did.  And it poured (rain, that is).  He felt sorry for us and told us we could quit after we finished the most heavily used car.

The rain jacket only covers to the waist.  The rest of me was soaked.

Home now.  Getting ready for work tomorrow, then it's beddy-bye time.

It Sure was a nice day for Bike Riding, albeit a bit "Breezy"; Sarah & I put the bikes on the Jeep and went towards the western part of the county and got on one the bike/walking trails that runs on top of the flood wall/levee; lot of other bicyclists and pedestrians taking advantage of the nicer, cooler weather.

Not this time, not really that much to see, other than some nice cloud formations. The trail does sort of follow a set of rails that go in and out of the "Riverport" in that area, but alas, nothing on the rails today.

[although, it did look like they had recently done some track work; tie replacement and fresh ballast.]

Re: Flat Wheel Cafe/Diner, August 2009 Edition

Good Monday morning, everyone.  Nice and cool this morning ,with a temp of 56 degrees here in the city.  Going for a very comfortable high of 74 today.  Hope everyone had a very enjoyable weekend, and are ready to start a new week.

Coffee, juices, iced teas and hot water for hot tea are ready.  Along with a fresh drum of Gatorade hooked up to the tap.

On the breakfast/warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, pork sausage, scrambled eggs, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy, hash browns, oatmeal, toast, jelly, jam and preserves.

Everyone enjoy your breakfast, have a great morning, and you all take care.

Hello Americans, it's Monday! At present, 71 and cloudy with rain forecast. We had a big system of storms come through last night with heavy thunder, but today, no thunder! This is moving day again, and the page is up, so go over as you will. Everyone take care
