Re: Union Pacifc Global IV

I work at logistics park in elwood , and the track has been connected for some time . The new Global 4 site is nearly twice as large as Logisistics Park . The UP has no plans to use Logistics park . Rochelle isn't slow due so much from the economy as it's location , it is just too far from Chicago . The Company I work for also works out of Rochelle , and Canal Street , and we are being informed of this information . Global 1 from what I am told is not closing the UP is just planning on adjusting it's use , the same with Rochelle . The sight outside Joliet , makes sense due to it's location to I 80 , I 55 , I 57  & I 355 .

Re: Union Pacifc Global IV

Thanks for clarifying the situation for Global 1.

I'm a little confused at this point - just where is Global 4 if it's not part of Logistics Park?

I agree that Logistics Park is a strategically located site for for highway distribution except for driving across the southern suburbs on I-80 from I-57 to I-65.

Global 4 is located about 5 miles north of logistics park just off of IL 53 ( Route 66)

and Laraway RD . It is across the highway from the Chicagoland Speedway .

. . .  and Chicago has not been picked as the site of the Olympics, at least as of now.  There are still a couple of things to be worked out, like who's gonna pay for it . . .

Re: Union Pacifc Global IV

I guess that it makes sense that the UP is going to close the Canal St Yard after they open Global IV in Elwood. Some of the intermodal traffic that is currently at Global I can be shifted to Global IV allowing the Canal St TOFC/LCL and other intermodal traffic to shift over to Global I. ZCSLT will eventually become ZG1LT for example.

I suspect that Global IV will operate in a manner similar to Global III in Rochelle? Block swapping for different Chicago terminals / eastern connections with some outbound trains made-up. Global III may not be operating exactly the way that UP officials had anticipated, but it serves its purpose of breaking-up blocks to different inner-city yards / eastern connections very nicely. This yard has taken a lot of trucks off of Chicago streets. Also, it continues to offer shippers the option to by-pass Chicago. The new Global IV should have that same benefit.

Re: Union Pacifc Global IV

With all of this talk of UP intermodal, Global 1, and the Olympics, was it just a coincidence that UP units 2000/2001 were at Global 1 yesterday?

These units are the "Carry the Torch" units.  I didnt know about these and was surprized when driving north on Western Avenue and the units were on the overpass.  Nice.

What is the history of these units?

Ed, that should be UP 2001 and 2002, both SD70Ms. They were delivered in this paint scheme to head the Olympic torch train for the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2001. There were numbers reserved for these two somewhere in the 4000 series, but I can't remember offhand what they were.

After spending months, perhaps years, operating between the three Global yards and other Intermodal yards in Chicago, they were recently freed up to run on a train from Global 1 to Los Angeles and return. They might be doing it again by now.

Carl:

Those are in Chicago regularly?  I had never seen them.  Nice looking units.

Not so sure about Chicago, but until they started going cross-country they'd make it to Proviso at least once a day.

Re: Union Pacifc Global IV

In recent weeks UP has moved domestic intermodal traffic between Chicago and the PNW & Oakland from Canal St to Global 2
