Happy as a Lark (Pictures Added)

I won a AA set of very nice looking Santa Fe 2343 diesels on ebay today.

I accidentally caused a short on an MTH PS2 engine and destroyed the electronics ($200+ repair bill) so I returned my layout to postwar conventional.  I caused the short during troubleshooting a headlight problem.  I will retire the engine.

I have never had a postwar engine fail such that I could not repair it and at no cost.  I have had several modern engines fail that were fixed through warranty.

So, for now, I'm awaiting my 2343 diesels and I am enjoying the simple life of a postwar layout.  I am happy as a lark.

Earl

Consider converting the zotted locomotive to conventional e-unit operation.  It's not difficult if you can find room for the e-unit.  I run a couple of converted MTH locomotives.

Good for you.  I run 50 and 60 year old engines all the time and they are great. No fancy do-dads or sound but a sound car can be added anytime.  ENJOY and forget the battries and repairs.

Me too. My excursion into O scale RR is a nostalgic trip to the time when my brother and I played with "His" train in the basement of our house.  I always wanted one of my own, and when my kids were small we built a modest HO scale layout, but it just was never very satisfying. I longed for the good old Lionel trains. I have no interest in the modern stuff that chuffs and puffs and dings and all that. although I might add a sound unit to the unpowered A unit of my NYC F3 ABA set that I was lucky enough to get on ebay. I love the sound of the trains as they rumble around the track. The lights flicker in some of the passenger cars but I have found these post war trains relatively easy to maintain and I get a satisfaction from seeing a 50 - 60 year old American made toy that can perform as well today as it did when new. I will admit that the new engines and cars are very beautiful and their sound and smoke systems look very realistic but I still like the old slightly battered look of the originals.

Here are the 2343 Santa Fe locos that I won on ebay.  They should arrive in a week or two.

Those F3's look great!  They are an item on my 'someday list'.

I run both modern 'whiz bang with all the bells and whistles' stuff and post war conventionals.  I am happy with both.  They each have their distinct personalites.

Great idea.  If you want to go to "electronic" e-unit, I have several and will be glad to ship them to you.

Re: Happy as a Lark (Pictures Added)

Earl and everyone else, I'm going through a bit of a hard time now and I was thinking to myself tonight that I have a roof over my head, food to eat and shoes on my feet. I know it sounds so cliche, but the reality is those simple things make me among the richest people in the world, since (hard to believe in our American culture) there are still many in this world who lack these simple things.

As far as trains, I've learned to take a little more of a backseat on making critical comments about all the new technology. Obviously people are buying it and hopefully enjoying it. On the other hand, one does seem to read more posts about frustrations with the new high end technology and related trains.

I too enjoy my more simplistic conventional less-than-prototypical 027 kinds of trains. I know they're not the best available today. But that's not why I buy or run trains - just to have the best. I run for fun, not frustration. And with my more modern-era (but totally conventional) DC can motored locos, I have had good luck.... even with early ones first made by Lionel MPC. And any troubles I have had are not too complicated for me to either fix or make revisions to. Sure, sometimes they can be a pain to fix, but they are repairable and I can always find parts.

Keeping the trains simple could possibly be not as much fun, but they are also a lot less trouble. And that can ultimately lead to more fun. What's the point of having the best looking, most realistic, most up-to-date train if it doesn't work and parts are not available?

Earl.... I run conventional and love it. No expensive problems. Maybe, some day, I will add some sound to one of my engines.

Also, that is a beautiful set of AA 2343s.
