I'm not ashamed of being a MRR. I'm more embarrassed by the guy--usually someone who stares gap jawed at the tooooobe at night who stands there looking at a MRR --- claps his hands together and then squeals in a girlish voice---" oh look at the pretty little choo choo trains!" Remember--he's doing this to poke fun at your hobby---and he has no life---

Just plant that in your mind--

Re: Are You Sometimes Ashamed To Be A MRR

Well, while we're on page 12 or so of this subject, let me relate a story that happened this week:

As a lot of you know, I teach chorus at a local boy's Catholic high school.  One of my students, who graduated this year, has won a full scholarship to the Cleveland Institute of Music, and is an extremely talented 17-year old tenor.  He's giving a 'farewell recital' later this month and has asked me to accompany him.  I'm very honored, BTW.

Anyway, to get to the story, he came over last week for a rehearsal.  The garage door happened to be up, with my model railroad on full display.  He just stood outside the garage in awe, staring at the train.  When I went out to let him in the house, he looked at me and said, "Is this YOURS, Doc?"  "Yes, Raymond."  "OMYGAW!  Does it RUN?"  "Yes."  "Will you RUN it for me?"  Of course, I happened to have a train all made up, so I ran it for him.  He just stood there, jaw dropped.   We went in and rehearsed for about an hour.  When we finished, he asked me if he could watch it 'run' again.  An hour rehearsal turned into about three.  After he was getting ready to go, he looked at me and said, "Doc, I always WANTED one of these when I was a kid!"

I kept a straight face.  But next rehearsal, he wants to bring his girl-friend over so she can see it, too.  And he's hinting that he'd sure like to have the reception for his recital at my house.

We'll have to see about that.

Another reason I could never be ashamed of my hobby.  It seems to attract very intelligent people, LOL!

Tom

Re: Are You Sometimes Ashamed To Be A MRR

Hey All!

Hmmm, Ashamed to be a MRR.  My answer is, wait for it, wait some more, OK here it is.......

NO NO NO AND DOUBLE NO

I know that people do have different interest, and that's cool for them,  I'm not ashamed at all of it with all the new technoligy that is out now in modelrailroading I would think that almost anyone would be marveled.  I have a friend once tell me that he was talking to someone we both work with about my love for trains, the comment he heard was, " I didn't know they allow kids to work here"   at first I was a little p---ed off, but then I thought of it, MRRDing is for the young at heart,  It's as they say 'THE WORLDS GREATEST HOBBY!!!!!"

So if anybody was to knock your hobby be it airplaines, cars, rockets, or TRAINS, don't get upset just tell them  you must do not understand this hobby, and can I ask what do you like to do as a pastime?

Re: Are You Sometimes Ashamed To Be A MRR

Let me sum up what has been posted in this thread:

  • Yes, we all bumped into someone making funny remarks about our hobby.
  • Yes, we all met someone, whom we were able to impress with the work we do.
  • Yes, model railroading is a real man´s (and woman´s hobby).
  • Yes, it is part of the pursuit of happiness and thus a constitutional right.
  • No, we don´t have to be ashamed of it.

Will someone now please lock this thread?
