Jeff: do they send you guys out for storm spotter duty? We're still a month or so away from having our assigned "storm watch" teams marked up for duty.
No. Our storm watchers are volunteers.

I'm guessing you mean like Skywarn, Ham radio, CB-ers REACT, that sort of thing? We get them too, but they also tone us out for it. "Other duties as assigned," I guess...

Chris

Here it's mostly volunteer firefighters and reserve officers. When I was working as a newspaper carrier some years ago I would track tornadoes and let 911 know where they were headed via my two-way 40 watt I have in the car. I have a high power hand held for backup. I still track a storm once in a while but not near as much as I used to.

The guys who were contracted to put the new septic system in arrived to do it today as all their other work sites were too wet. Mine is on a hilltop so it's reasonably dry. They got the new tank in, dug out the ditches and put in the pipes. Now I have to get the gravel into the ditches. I moved two trailer loads myself. That's about 10 cubit feet per load. The ground is fairly wet despite being on a hilltop so I can't move full loads which would be about 16 cubic feet per load. Something is gonna have to change though. I can't keep moving that gravel by myself. I ripped my foot open again, and it was healing so well. Depending on what the foot looks like in the morning I may not do anything tomorrow. I'm gonna have to rewrap it here in a few minutes. Man, I hate working with bloody dressings.

Good evening everyone. My name's Pierre. I've never been in here before and I saw a sign that said a whole pie of my chioce free for new people. I'll take a pecan. You all seem like nice people to visit with. So I thought I would stop in and say hi. It sure is nice of you to give away pie.

Be careful with that foot Jeff. that doesn't sound good and I don't have to tell you what you probably already know about feet, open wounds etc. Take care.

Well my pie is here so Thanks and I'll try to stop in sometime. (bolts to the door)

Jeff: Man, sorry to hear about your foot, take care of yourself!

And, we're all vollies here too. You know it's gonna be a bad weather day in the neighborhood when all along Hwy. 30 you see each town's fire rigs out alongside the road, each one about a mile or two West of their town...

Trauma, tornadoes, trains...and PIE. A plethora of variety here in the diner tonight boys (and girls)!

Re: Elliott's Trackside Diner VIII

pcarrell:
As it is, it's a go 45 minute ride to get there for me, whereas Hobbytown is about 20 minutes.
Distance am key. I'll go by if we're in Indy. Also, did you knwo they're gonna move to the old Circuit City down the street? (Least ast I heard)

pcarrell:
the folks at HT are fine hobbyists with a passion for model railroads, and, if it's not in stock, they'll get it, period.

There's a few there that I must disagree with on that. Dan is great, as are most of the employees. But some had a falling out with NWR. No more details shall be mentioned.

pcarrell:
On top of that, if it's not something they commonly stock, they give you a 10% discount for being patient while they order it.
Did not know that.

Tone you out? Huh? You should try some of our HAMs. Gooder people who do the strom watches.

pcarrell:
There's also a little hole in the wall that's a real gem just west of Shadeland on Washington.  It's called Train Central.  Lots of detail parts, cars, loco's, kits and brass for HO scale, and a modest supply of interesting stuff in other scales.

I believe Wayne is looking to add Digitrax

pcarrell:
There is also a place just south of the Greenwood Mall called Whistles & Growls.  I haven't been there in a couple of years (I need to swing by there soon and check it out again) that had a smaller selection of N scale stuff (they seemed more into HO), but they used to carry a lot of Micro Engineering stuff, including the hard to find track in code 55.  There's a few other places around, but that's the ones I know

Yeah, he;s mostly HO as of last month, with a fairly tall bookcase of N and some scenery parts. Neat guy. Also has some older run stuff

Ah, let's be blunt. It sucks outside right now. Put dog on leash to potty, so she wouldn't fly away.

Re: 02-11-2009

Evening Gang: I got two fields disked and started on the neighbors. He was out walking so I shut the tractor down and we visited for a bit. We don't get to see eash other often enough so had a bit of catching up to do. He's a retired lawyer and an artest. He built a very nice studio next to his house when they moved out here. He said that he's shut down the studio because he got tired of running the business. I'd like to get him to help with my back rounds if I ever get that far. He's good.

Not much else going on.

Welcome to Nick . So what scale, era, area, prototype, or freelance do you do? yes we are a noisy bunch but very likeable.

Lee I heard about that ice flow that broke away in Lake Erie. Great job by the Coastes and the local guys. They rescued 134 people from the ice. Give them a big hand everyone.

I guess I'll head out. Tomorrow is another one of those very early wake up days.

Good Night All

Jeff, keep it clean, wrapped tight.  Feet are hard to come by!

My dreams of my coffee plant are on hold.  Moms condition had drastically deteriorated..... the cancer is too far advanced.  She never told me the extent.  The doctor called me today because he was unable to carry a conversation with her....... well the rest is obvious.. sit and wait.....  I might make 3 full days at work, the most in the last 4 weeks.

I was hoping to go on vacation next week to see the WGH show in San Antonio.....and my dear friend Kathy......

Re: 02-11-2009

Evenin' folks!

Hey Barry!  Could you do us all a favor and go back to your last post here and about halfway through the sound effects line hit return and make it 2 lines.....?  That would bring the page width back down to where we don't have to scroll over about a page and a half to read each line of every post.....  Thanks!

I just got back from Tiger Valley Models.  Guil's HO layout is another WOW but of a different kind.  How about 1800 square feet of model railroad.  I think he said the room is 40' across (in all directions). The entire basement of his house.  The house is built basically circular (12 sided I think) and the entire basement is one huge open area.  he has over 4000 cars and at least a couple hundred ALCO locomotives on it. Of course he builds the locomotives in his shop in the barn.  He showed me one the the molds he uses for making castings of parts. When I got there he was busy running an 85 car train around one of his mainlines.  The layout is actually 4 separate railroads that interchange with each other.  Layout is DC and he is still using the old Pre-horn hook type of coupler (like from the 1950's).  Many of the cars are still being used from the 1950's.

OK, Zoe, time for a hot fudge sundae, and a cup of decafe!

Jeffrey take care of that foot!  I don't like the sound of what you are describing.

Re: 02-11-2009

Eric- You have to take care of yourself as well--we'll be here praying as ever--I'm never too sure of these things---when our OMA passed away all of us got some of the story but never really all of it either. It would come as a shock--again take care--if need a pair of ears/eyes PM me....

Ray- hopefully this works out---BTW do you think you could find out how he does his castings? I'm trying to figure this casting thing out because I seem to be missing some pieces I can't find anywhere.--everytime you put info up here I read this to Audrey and she's getting more curious---seems she heard about this fellow----

Jeff-you take good care of your feet---they don't get replaced too well around here!

Flashwave: " Tone you out? Huh? You should try some of our HAMs. Gooder people who do the strom watches."

Yep, dispatch sends out a set of tones over the radio, activates our pagers. "Tone-out," "drop the tones," common fire/EMS slang for getting dispatched. And yes, them HAMs are "gooder people." My Dad has been a Ham forever. I never caught the bug for it myself, despite his best efforts. He got into radio/electronics, I got into trains, firefighting, and EMS. Sometimes...I think he still wonders how/where he went wrong with me...

Jeff: How's that foot doing??

Best wishes to all,

Chris

Re: 02-11-2009

Another Mason jar of milk please.

Just finished repairing my 4-8-4 after a two-way cornfield meet. The tender fell to the floor and the shell fell off the frame. Listen to the dispacher i say, but No! stay on the Mainline and rear-end a watering freight! Oh well, it's fixed now, and I can forgive my brother now.

Thanks New Haven I-5!

See Yall!
