MRC 1801 decoder w/ sound for Athearn (& others?) RS-3

Has anyone tried installing the MRC 1801 dcc sound decoder in an RS-3? The MRC literature says it fits 'most' Athearn, Atlas, Kato & Proto RS-3s (although its also advertised as a drop in replacement for Athearns). So..

1) What do they mean by 'most'. I would think it either fits or it doesn't. I mostly want to know if it fits w/o modification in Atlas and/or Proto's.

2) What does it sound like? On paper, the specs look very good and the price is much less than Soundtraxx. It also has the advantage (at least from an installation pov) in that the speaker is mounted to the decoder; no need to cut the chassis.

Dont be fooled by the price, save your pennies and buy something that wont give you headaches.

The sound is mediocre, the reliability is horrible but the price is good.......you have been warned.
