module critique

my new layout idea is based on the Jan 2009 mr project layout the beer line.  this module is 6 small (1-3 max cars) industries and a runaround

the turnouts are #5 (i know they look a lot sharper) so will it work in this space?  my idea was to build this module first and run it while working on the others. so does it look operable and buildable?

I think that you're going to find that your design will be very boring to operate after the first few times. It's the same exact "piece" for each industry you have presented.

What scale is this in?

What is the space that this will take up?

Where will you "stage" incoming traffic while doing the switch work?

Is this part of a larger railroad, and designed to augment operations similar to an industrial park?

Re: module critique

As mentioned too boring.  Mix it up a little.  Run some of the spurs as minimum radius curves (you don't mention a scale but I assume its N) of 9" radius between the foreground buildings into the rear buildings.  On one end I would run a spur over into the street between the rows of buildings and parallel to the buildings on the back row, crossing each of the curved spurs that cross the street.  I would also double up some of the spurs and make one building in the front row shallow and run the spur into the footprint at an angle.

Here is a plan, N-scale.  Atlas #5 turnouts with a 11.5 deg crossing.  Min Radius on the siding is 9", Track spacing is 1.5" and overall size is 5 feet by 1.5 feet.

This plan has the ability to run around your train and switch in a few different directions.  Also something to keep in mind is that unless you are modeling something before 1950 most industries that would only have a single boxcar for loading would have most likely have moved to truck.

The big issue with the plan as presented above is that the "run around" doesn't really offer any option for running around a few cars while keeping a few others. It looks like it would fit one locomotive on the tail track, if you were that lucky.

The diamond as above would be avoided any way possible, due to the increased attention they must receive from MOW to keep them safe and operational.

Re: module critique

I figure that this would not be a stand alone module, but something attached to a larger layout.  There is no way to fix the problem with lack of staging in a space of this size.

I realized that a diamond would be used only if necessary but I have seen enough of them around Buffalo and Rochester, NY that I would still consider it an option.

Re: module critique

first, yes it will be part of a larger layout, it will be very similar to the beer line as in 4 modules; 2 U turn, 2 straight.

second, okay, first try was crap.   Stilson i like your plan, i may just elaborate off of it and change a few things if its okay.  (the runaround problem could be fixed by flipping the crossovers, i think.)

Re: module critique

okay next shot.  this version has more room on sidings and more interesting track arrangements.

" align="texttop"> so does this look okay?  i have no idea of the industries except the smallish one in the center will be a freight station/team track.
