WATERLOO - One-third of the Union Pacific railroad bridge parallel to Sixth Street over the Cedar River in downtown Waterloo has washed away in the flood waters.

The third of the bridge adjacent to the east bank of the Cedar River washed away at 2:45 p.m.

corp of engineers just close Mississippi river to all barge traffic  from Muscatine(sp), Ia to Hannibal, Mo. I really hope all you midwest and plains posters that we do not hear from are OK. Please be careful out there.

I Just returned from Burlington IA. It was strange to see dozens & dozens of barges tied up to the banks, upriver from the bridge. Up in Dubuque IA, some barges got loose yesterday and they hit the US 20 bridge. I do not know if is now reopened. I wonder why we are seeing barges get loose lately. Maybe they always have, but they didn't hit bridges.
