corp of engineers just close Mississippi river to all barge traffic  from Muscatine(sp), Ia to Hannibal, Mo. I really hope all you midwest and plains posters that we do not hear from are OK. Please be careful out there.

Re: Railroad Bridge in Downtown Waterloo (IA) Collapses

I Just returned from Burlington IA. It was strange to see dozens & dozens of barges tied up to the banks, upriver from the bridge. Up in Dubuque IA, some barges got loose yesterday and they hit the US 20 bridge. I do not know if is now reopened. I wonder why we are seeing barges get loose lately. Maybe they always have, but they didn't hit bridges.

According to an eyewitness on the news, those barges were being moved through an area of the river where they shouldn't have been and got loose from the tug due to current.  The bridge was inspected and is open again.
