2046 vs. 2056 ???

I know the 2046 has magna-traction, whereas the 2056 doesn't, but other than that, is there any other cosmetic or other difference that would make one better than the other?

Re: 2046 vs. 2056 ???

Not that I'm aware of, other than the 2056 was available only one year (1952) it may be a little harder to find and always has a die-cast trailing truck. I think occasionally the 2046 is seen with a sheet metal trailing truck.

I'm sure there are others out there with more experience than I who can weigh in.

I have a 2046 and it runs fairly smooth and smokes up a storm.

The 2056 was simply the korean war issue 2046. The magnetic material was not available in quantity during the war(if anyone has more info on what the military used it for i'd like to know.), so they removed the magnets, and the motor side plates are blackened steel instead of shiny aluminum,  other than that they are identical. The 2056 looks better in my opinion without the aluminum side plates showing up.

Re: 2046 vs. 2056 ???

I agree with Ivesboy that the sideplates on the 2046 are a distraction, but the magnetraction to me is worth it in the exchange for the pulling power.  My 2046 is the 3 cab window version (1950) and runs like new, decent smoker as well, especially when under a heavy consist load.

Lionel used alnico magnets back then. Some of the strongest for the time. Among other things alnico is used in loudspeakers. Also the nickel used to make the alloy was needed where durability is a factor like (ball) bearings.

Re: 2046 vs. 2056 ???

Thanks for the reply's. Looks like I'm the proud owner of a hopefully restorable 2056. Probably as close as I'll ever get to a Lionel berk... I wanted the engine because I have a silver Livingston passenger car, and it appears that it was only included in a set headed by a 2056. If that is wrong, please correct me! How does the 2056 run? Is it comparable to a 665/2055? I will probably only use it to pull the 4-car passenger set, so hope that it doesn't need magna-traction to pull them.

Re: 2046 vs. 2056 ???

My 2046 runs smoother and smokes better than my 2055.  The 2056 may even be smoother than the 2046 as the wheels will not be attracted to a magnet.  My 2046 with a 2046W was a bargain at $87.50.  A new pair of brushes and a thorough cleaning was all that it needed.  I think you can't go wrong with a 2046/2056.  They really are great pieces.
