Open house show and sale

Has anyone had an open house show of their layout at their home  along with a sale of stuff that you really don't need.  I have been thinking about this for some time but don't really  know how to go about it.  I have both DC and DCC engines and several older rolling stock that I will sell also. Do I advertise all that I have or just HO train show and sale? Wife not too crazy about people going through the house to get to the basement.

  Hi Baron

How about a local club in your area? Go and talk to the people about what you have available for sale plus take pictures of your layout with you and see whos interested.

I would agree with your wife's concerns about having a lot of people in your home.  A better choice might be Ebay or buy a table at a train show swap meet.

I have had people in my home for a layout tour, but it was by invatation and/or unknown guests came with people that I knew.

Not a good idea to let strangers into your house and around your layout. There's been a few irate posts here about stuff getting boosted.

Re: Open house show and sale

Only my My 2 cents [2c].. I would ebay the unwanted stuff. A little more of a pain in the rump sometimes than just dumping it at a swap style sale but usually more $$ will come for it. If you insist on selling it out of your home however, 2 words. Yard Sale.

As for letting visitors in, I never do it unless I've known them for quite some time. Not really worried about stuff getting stolen, I just don't like strangers wandering through my house. Too many other problems can come with it. With respect to the Mrs, after everyone is gone, you still have to live with her.

Re: Open house show and sale

Biggest reason I don't participate in layout tours or other events requiring my house and layout to be open to the public.  Wife goes nuts, dogs go nuts, neighbors go nuts, public goes nuts.  Nuts.

Fastest way to lose friends and stuff.
