Need help with wiring rotary audio switch
Posted by Otis on Sunday, June 1, 2008 12:43 PM

Here I go again with puzzles re: my stationary decoder sound experiment.

I have gone to rotary switches to isolate the DSX decoders and audio transformers from one another instead of using parallel terminal strips. But in my limited way, I did not puzzle out a correct solution.

This diagram shows the wiring.  But of course, the transformers make a complete circuit from each side....that is, instead of being isolated, both Points A have continuity, both B etc.

If it was not a transformer being connected, the Points A, B, C etc would not have a common connection.

Did I use the wrong rotary switch?  Or will I have to put in two completely separate rotary switches?

(BTW, everything works very well when I connect each audio circuit independently.  I just want the conveniece of a switch instead needing to have 6 separate jacks and physically switching them as needed.)

Thanks for any feedback.

So, do you have a problem with the way it is wired?

Looks to me like that should work OK. You could have connected ALL the BLACK transformer leads together, and to the BLACK output; then you'd only have to switch the RED leads. Only need a ONE-pole 4 (or 6) position switch.

Thanks.

Well, I may have traced back the problem.  I have a faulty audio plug.  No outward sign of a problem, but looses contact when it flexes with insertion of male jack.  Duh! Banged Head [banghead]
