I always sorta thought the dust gave my layout that natural "weathered" look .
That way I didn't have to put fake dirt on the trains to give it effect.
I use a micro shop vac accessory pack by shop vac. It works with the shpo vac and the attachments are great. There is a small brush attachment that you use and seems to work the best for getting dust off of cars and roofs and the streets. Cost about 10 bucks at wal mart.
