Tail light bulbs are ok but light up your feet and the floor under the layout. Found them distrackting.:) A better solution IMHO is Digital Specialty's PSX. Tony's Train Exchange has all the specifications and hints They are solid state (no relay) and work flawlessly to limit inrush current like the tail lights. New sound units suffer from inrush and will trip any booster without circuit protection. You never have a situation of cascading tripping between the booster and power managment modules. |

As I've said, the PSX modules work extremely well, even a slight bit better than the bulbs. But even the PSX's have an option to add a buzzer or an LED so you know *where* the short is.
But what I do say is the bulbs work almost as good as a $30 PSX, for only $1-$2 per bulb. The cost savings on the whole layout could be enough to buy one or two nice sound-equipped QSI locos!
And the bulbs work well enough that I don't find the $30 expense of the PSX module to be justified.
The bulbs are inexpensive and effective enough that you can break up the layout more and get excellent short management, which I demonstrate on video here. You can say good bye to cries of "Okay, WHO shorted the layout?!"
