Technical Issues After August 13, 2012 Maintenance

  • "JaBear"

Gidday,  Hmm Hmm  Well I guess there are some improvements as we can now change fonts, colours, and size.

Actually, JaBear, you could do that with the prior format, too.  The Font family, Font size, and font color were listed before.  The Paragraph/heading option is new though.

Yeah it shows the icon for the user who created the thread. That's nice, but more useful would be an icon indicating unread messages.

    Randy,

What about just using the Unread tab near the top of the page?  Or, are you just wanting to see it at a glance w/o having to do that?

One thing we have to remember, this forum is FREE.

I have never clicked on, Email me replies. Even with this new format.

    Rich

The old one was free, too and I liked it a lot better.  This one sucks.

hey hey... techies don't do content... we can't take credit for the flipping of the logo.. :)

    Nice catch.

Why can't you just leave things alone?  Big companies do this a lot.  They keep changing things, so that productivity suffers while the worker bees are constantly learning the "new" system.

  • Looks like the delete option has been added now.  Thank you! Big Smile

[Edit: ...but only to "New Posts".  It would still be nice to have the ability to delete a post in a thread.]

  • Every time I log in I get an error message, but it still logs me in.

      • Can we get the default to be set to "Use rich formatting" for everyone in all forums

I really have to agree w/ you Lion. The join date, location and post count can be rather beneficial as to knowing one's locale for certain replies pertaining to such (Layout construction/ train room for example, can vary w/ locations and affect our replies (tep, humidity, room prep, local building codes, waterproofing etc.) Realizing location to aid in locating LHS, local clubs, upcoming show to their area, railfanning and what RR and so much more. Join date/ post count allows to identify "Newbies". This helps to realize a newbie and welcome them as well as set the type/ tone of replies to them.

  • Why am I getting a truncated list of possible tags for posts?  Prior to the change, the tag list went from A to Z (or close to it).  Now it stops around K or L.

I have found in life that old people seem to embrace change the least....while not giving it a fair shot.  I think there are a lot more old people on here then I originally thought!

    Hey, I'm 73 and I like it.

This new format is terrible. Techies cannot seem to leave things alone that work.

As "Bones" said from "Star Trek The Movie"

If it's one thing I know, it's engineers!  They can't leave well enough alone!

I liked the old Your Discussions tab much better.  It grouped all of my Discussions together regardless of which forum the thread was located on.  Under this awful new fomat, Your Discussions is grouped under each forum.  Now I have to look around ten times instead of once.

    Rich

Don't know if you figured this out yet, but over on the right under where you manage your profile you can click on "Your Discussions" there and all your threads are pulled together regardless of the forum you are in.   If you click on the "your discussions" tab under each forum, you only see your discussions from within that forum.  Seems to be quite a useful feature to me?

  • Where computer and IT folks are concerned there is a monster in every well meaning heart called the "feature creature"  It just attacked the forums and is somewhat immutable as any turnback to any old ways is considered gauch and responding to old fogey's complaints.  Not forward looking at all.

The feature creature ate a lot of our favorite toys and deficated some interesitng things on the page.  Some may be useful, some not.  Regardless, we are stuck here in this raveged land and must pick up the pieces and wade into whatever stumpling blocks the creature left in his wake as well as take advantage of what few useful things we might discover, since we have no new user's manual.

I am glad the content is still here, of course.  Other than having the lights turned out and bumping into a few things in the dark, I think I'll stumble back out into some sort of illumination given time and the verve to ride this out.

If I can't fix it, I can fix it so it can't be fixed

  • My knee jerk reaction when I first looked at this yesterday was "Arghh   why did they change it?"

I thought I would play around for a bit before letting off steam, and frankly I can't find anything I could not do before.  I have plodded through the complaints list, and it seems to me that all but a few of these issues are addressed.  Functionality has improved significantly in some areas

    • Spell check integrated
    • Speed of search
    • Look and feel on hand held devices

Initially it looked like it was a pain to get to the end of a long thread, but clicking on "latest post" gets you right there.

Complaints about the use of screen real-estate are addressed fairly easily in IE8 and 9 with the zoom level feature, though it does seem that there is a lot of blank space around each thread, reducing the number of threads on screen at once.

The inability to delete a post seems to be the biggest oversight for the time being.  Post counts etc. are apparently coming back.

I suspect that the old forum software, being somewhat antiquated, was a nightmare to maintain, and while on the surface was "not broken" to us users, may well have been a disaster for our hosts.  A free forum that is a nightmare to maintain, would be a very good candidate for a modern upgrade.  So I don't really subscribe to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" line of thought.
