Feedback on forum performance -- Jul 15, 2003

  • Hello all,

I hope everyone has been managing okay with the new forums. I want to let everyone know that if there are any problems you're encountering on the site or if you need some help figuring something out, please don't hesitate to post your question or send us an email.

Since we went live with the new forums, one of the most common complaints has been in regards to the speed or performance of the site -- forums in particular. During the last 24 hours (and most likely through tomorrow) we've had the ads disabled in this section of the site. We're looking for feedback in regards to the performance of the forums during this time. Please let us know whether or not you've experienced a difference in the time it takes to load pages in the forum.

    Thanks,
    Dave

  • Dave,
I think it is running quite a bit quicker. Didn't get out the stop watch, but i sure does seem quicker. I don't know about others, but I'm not even thinking about ads when in the forum. The POSTs are the main meat. Offers way more than the ads. Ads have their place, it just isn't here.

    I hear what you're saying.

    In a perfect world... [;)]

With the feedback I receive here, if I know the forum loads quickly for everyone without the ads, then it will confirm that the adserver is the problem.

  • Hi Dave,
The forum is working fine for me in terms of speed. I am having one problem with my membership. At the top of the page it always says welcome Willy2, which is my member name, however, at the bottom of the page it calls me an anonymous member. This started about 36 hours ago. What happened? I would be very happy if you could help me out!

  • David - I saw your post about website loading speed on the MRR Forum, it is running a little faster without the ads, but not by much.

I thought I'd run an idea past you which might improve speed, I dabble a liitle in web design but am not an expert by any means so you've probably already thought of it and ruled it out - but here goes:

Throughout the whole Trains.com site I notice the nav bar at the top of the screen is part of each page, not a seperate frame, and therefore reloads every time you refre***he screen or move around in the site. I know that there has been a movement amongst web designers away from frame built pages because if not done properly they can be really irritating, but in this instance loading only once when you login would really help the speed of the site because the nav bar is very graphic orientated. If you wanted you could run a script that reloads the nav bar every so often to change the ads.
