Alot of my friends think trains are cool, and they ALL know that I work on the trains. I actually just got a txt two nights ago from this girl I kno, (not the ugly ones either) and she was in the park watching a movie on movie night. SHe had had trobule pronouncnig this engines lettering, so i had helped her, but anyway the txt goes: "MAX! The SOO went by, the SOO went by!!"
Just MAKE the trains cool to your friends. Be a leader, not a follower.

Don't let some dumb kids get you down on your hobby, screw them, honestly, there not going to get anywhere in life if they have to resort to picking on others to make themselves feel big and important.
Kids used to make fun of me in grade school and middle school, they stopped though,I just stopped caring what the dumb popular kids thought, as most of them are braindead from drugs and alcohol by now. (Im an 11th grader) Really though, just dont listen to them, they don't matter.
I've been in this hobby for six years now and when i started i was only 13 yrs old as well. And yes people did make fun of me but i didn't let them stop me. I kept going because its something i like. It wasn't until i graduated last month that people started to stop and ask me how they can start.
I know how it feel and yes at times i wanted to stop but then i found that if i just didn't say anything about it no one made fun of me or spoke of it.
Know i am starting the scenery of my layout, modeling the NYC, and NH railroads at a feelanced interchange. When i started to tell people about it and finally showed them they stop and in the end i started helping them with there first layout.
The point is if you like something don't let other deside for you, you are the only one that can deside what happens in your life. And for that i hope you stay in the hobby because it truly is a fun a interesting hobby!
Have fun and a great time!
Slightly OT, I admit.
Duo, check out Maybrook, NY, which was one of the historic interchanges between the NYC and NH. You may find some inspiration there.
As for everyone else -- remember, stick to your guns, and love your hobby, no matter what. Have the courage to persevere in the face of adversity. BTW, did you notice that, once Duo's schoolmates had graduated and left some of that "gotta fit in, gotta be cool" mentality behind, some of them dared to express interest in the hobby?

AMEN! I am a nerd type person. (You'd never guess I was though, after school you'd see me SKATEBOARDING!!! and also, a lot of the kids in the smart class are widely accepted) While I still get made fun of buy some of the "cool" kids I am accepted by the cool kids. (Yes, the quotation marks make a difference. My school has a very complex hierarchy.) 8th grade is gonna be great!

I used to skateboard. I still do but not as much. I "quit" after I shredded up my knee doing a 5 stair handrail.. yeah.. ouch.
Hey, well guess what I'm 14 will be 15 in like one month (Freshman) and I have always liked trains since i was little (started with the thomas the tank engine metal toys), ans when I started in school I got made fun of it and in like 7th grade I didnyt really care I have my railfan pics on my MySpace, and I have gotten my girlfriend involved too. Don't be ashamed, I found one of my friends was a modeler and never knew it till I came out with it. Look man, Better to be hated for who you are then to be loved for who yours not. Mike

Its so strange even if its strange to them people should always support others especially if there friends!! No matter what happens i will always wnat to work for the RR's and i will always be a model railroader! Never let anyone get to you do what you want to do.
To add to that I get made fun of it, and when I think I cant do it or get down from people saying things like you cant work them or sometihng, or I bet you wont become a railroad engineer, my g/f and family are always there to help me remember I can do it if I want to. I will prove them wrong, mark my words. But like I said before members of my family and my g/f and a couple of my friends like trains, just find people who support you or like them too (or both) cause if they aint one of them then they arent friends.
