i happen to fall under this category my parents help me buy most of the things but when they cant/wont what do you do?

    P:

Well, when I was your age, I didn't have a whole lot of money, so I did what I could.  I salvaged a lot of lumber, I refurbished equipment from the train show, I built my scenery from hardware store stuff and scratchbuilt structures from old cereal boxes.  Maybe three times a year, I would spend about $20 at the train shop for new stuff.  I got a lot done that way.

If you want to do stuff like this, I recommend a few books:

THE BOYS' BOOK OF MODEL RAILROADING, and

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR MODEL RAILROAD, by Raymond F. Yates.

They're old, but bookstores can order you a used one, cheap.  Also...

HOW TO RUN A RAILROAD, by Harvey Weiss.

Old MR and RMC articles by E. L. Moore are great, too.  Moore was always proud of how cheaply his structures could be built.

Currently president of: a slowly upgrading trainset fleet o'doom.
