While in college I had a layout in my Dorm Room. It was a 4x8 with a pair of 3' long wings on either end where they went across a desk and into the closet.
Mind you I had a single room so I could do this. Single rooms in dorms are getting rarer so I don't know how successful new students or existing students would be at pulling this off.
The comments were great, they varied between, "did you know you have a train in your room?" to, "can you leave your room open when your gone. I want to play." I never had a problem with leaving the door open, because there was practically someone in there from noon to 7pm. My wing/floor liked to use it as a stress relief.
it was fun.
I'm trying to start a club. I hoping they have a bulletin board where I can put up a paper to see if anyones intrested.
I'm building an engine service facility module to use as a module for this purpose.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
I am 15 (soon to be 16) years old and i am the orgnizer of the newly formed Port Huron HO MRR club (we are despreatly looking for a shorter name) we have modelers who are retired and others who are still in middle school. it just goes to show, no matter the age everyone is connected by a single bond.
if you are trying to start a local club ask your hobby store to put up flyers with your e-mail on them saying that you are trying to start a club, wait untill you have at least 10 people involved then do your research at the NMRA website for standards. then make standards booklets, more flyers saying where and when your first meeing is, and e-mail the people that you have gotten e-mails from telling them the same thing. good luck!

They used to carry Atlas stuff, but they don't anymore. What was strange was it was ONLY BN. Wish I had the money for the Geeps, there all gone now, and they charge 3.5 bucks for 1 piece of flextrax. Yech. They've been helpful for paint and glue though. The only equipment they have now is Bachmann and Model Power. I might ask a manager someday if they can change it, since they are missing a goup of quite a few people by not haveing good quality equimpent. If they offer me a job to do that, that'd be nice (probably better pay, and they have a good looking girl that works there that's about my age ); since I don't really care for my job at Whataburger.
Well, I'm going to P-cola tommorow (car show, hopefully will pick up some quarter-windoe louvers for my stang), getting rid of my crappy LL equipment (hobby shop there will buy used equipment), hopefully I see something I want. (P2K GP20s, 38s, or SD45s, or a U-boat or two. [I got a U28B off of Ebay, should be here in a few days])
Here's the problem on my end. I've looked all over for railroad clubs and I just can't find any that will let 13 yr olds in. I personaly feel left out of the hobby, I love modeling railroads expecialy the Reading railroad. What should I do?
Well I saw this and thought I had to reply.
Let me start off saying that I've been into trains since i can remember. I grew up on Thomas the Tank Engine. I'm 23, and luckily for me I found a model railroad club only 20 minutes from me, the O scale Detroit Model Railroad Club (founded 1935), and although most of the membership is older, we do have a growing number younger members. One of the advantages that we have is that we offer different levels of membership for our members.
I will admit that for quite a few years i went away from the hobby and started doing the R/C stuff, but am now back into trains full time, and I usually spend every tuesday i can out at the club, but kinda sucks right now since for the next 10 weeks I've got a tuesday night class (im in college). But good news there is that the class will be doing rail-related stuff (see my thread in the Transit & Model RR General Discussion titled Class Project Light Rail... and Light Rail project for more info.)
anyway just my 2 cents
I say keep looking. My club is often visited by a kid who's probably around your age, maybe a bit younger. His dad brings him down and asked me early on if it would be okay to be frequent visitors. I recognized the importance in developing the younger fans' interests so I told him it was perfectly fine. He's helped paint and build...
Its important to keep young folks involved to help the hobby grow, I'm sure you'll find a club that's more willing to have you around if you just keep looking.

my granddaughters are into trains and there is nothing for them. the magazine articles are pretty much useless to them.
