  • CN's GMD1's are my #1 fav loco, especially the A1A-A1A ones the 1000's and 1600's, the B-B 1400's are ok too. Second would be the GP9, one of the best built diesel loco's ever, so much so that Central Manitoba Railway's main power are 4 GP9rm's, still with the 567c engines. Third would be the M420W's and HR412's, gotta love them smoky ALCO's. And for new power i like the ES44AC's on the CPR and the SD70M-2's on the CN, those engines are massive.

That's easy. Raymond Loewy's magnificent GG-1 electric. It's so beautiful. And, it's so OVER-engineered, like the Eads Bridge in St. Louis, that it outperformed and outlasted original expectations. Makes some of the so-called HST's look like planned obsolescence by comparison.
Maybe if the coolant system hadn't been so chock-full of PCB's, Amtrak and NJT could have kept the GG-1's running a few years longer.
