Different kinds of F40PH

  • There seems to be a ton of different kinds of F40PH.

    F40PH

    F40PH-2

    F40PH-2C

    F40PHM-2

    F40PHR

Can someone explane the difference and also which ones amtrak ever had on the roster.

    Save the F40PH!

    F40PH

The standard Amtrak F40PH and 6 for GO Transit. Amtrak later bought the 6 GO Transit locomotives.

    F40PH-2

F40PH as built for Commuter railroads and Via Rail

    F40PH-2C

These are new builds from MPI (Boise Locomotive, M-K). these have a separate diesel generator for Head End Power. All these were built for Commuter Railroads.

    F40PHM-2

These have a modified cab and were built for METRA in Chicago, the "Winnebagos"

    F40PHR

These are the F40PH locomotives build using parts from the unsuccessful SDP40F locomotives, they are not different from regular F40PH locomotives, the model exists only for accounting purposes. These were bought by Amtrak.

Many Amtrak F40PH and F40PHR have been sold to new owners including Commuter railroads and others.

  • I'll try to help:

F40PH: This is the basic model, sold to Amtrak, MBTA, Metra, NJ Transit, GO Transit

F40PH-2: Apparently the same as the F40PH, sold to Amtrak, Caltrain, Metra, VIA.

F40PH-2C:  Has a separate diesel-alternator set for HEP, not unlike early suburban power in Chicago.  Built by both EMD and MPI.  Sold only to MBTA.

F40PHM-2:  Modified cab and front end, last locomotives built at La Grange.  Sold only to Metra.

F40PHR:  This is apparently a bookkeeping difference only.  These were built for Amtrak on several orders using SDP40F's as trade-ins.

MPI has also built from scratch (not rebuilt from GP40's) several later versions of the F40PH for various suburban operations.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
  • You could also count Amtrak's F40AC rebuild. F40PH 202 was badly damaged during July 1984 while on the Montrealer. It was rebuilt with Brown-Bovari AC traction motors at Beech Grove shops during February 1988. This also included a 24" longer body and larger wheels. During 1993 the unit was given by Amtrak to the AAR and went to the test track in Pueblo, Colorado.

Ummmm, I guess the F40PH, and F40PH-2 are the 1s that Amtrak had.  They also had the F49PHI, and F40PHI-2s, and the noteable P40s, P32, and Dash 8 32BWHs.Sign - Off Topic!! [#offtopic]

  • Amtrak did not have F40PH-2s.  They had F40PHs and F40PHRs.

I have no idea what an F49PHI is.  Do you mean F59PHI?  Amtrak does have them.

I also have never heard of an F40PHI-2.  Are you sure on that designation?

  • Hi,

Owwwww, yeh....Sign - Oops [#oops].  It's those F59PHIs they had, my mistake.  I don't know too much about Amtrak, more about Via Rail Cnanda instead.  I know that they had F40PH-2s and F40PHs, and they got new, P42 "Genisis" G.E. engines now hauling their "Ocean" trains accros Canada like the Canadian.Sign - Oops [#oops]Sign - Off Topic!! Your very welcome,

  • Ah what about the Metro North F40PH-2CAT units? I heard they were old amtrak units what did they change about them. (I hope they diden't put in desktop controllers)
    Save the F40PH!
  • Don't forget the Harsco Track Technologies, a rail grinding comapany, that had some custom F40PH built  with a normally aspirated 645-16. the had the cab moved to the very front of the frame. Probably should have called them F38PHs.

  • That railgrinder looks like those odd european flat nosers, lmao!!

  • I always figured that those were old Amtrak units powering the rail grinding trains. . .

I've also gotta say that I think the MBTA has the best-painted F40s.

    Caltrain has some f40ph-2c locomotives. ( I think they are #'s 920-922 )
