BNSF on NS

  • I railfan the NS Lehigh Line. Ive seen some UP's and BNSF's.
  • When foriegn power makes it to the Lehigh Line its usually on the 211, 212, 213, or 214, one thing bad about the Pittsburgh Line is that very few units can lead (only ex Conrail units and the newer C40-9W's and SD70M's) because of cab signals, since most of the trains on the Harrisburg, Reading, and Lehigh Lines also head on the Pttsburgh Line there is not much of a chance of seeing foriegn power trailing (much less leading) in PA.

Mike: When I was in Altoona earlier this month I saw a DRGW SD40T-2 (one of two or three that are unpatched!!!!), UP SD40-2, BNSF H1 C44-9W, BNSF H2 C44-9W, and a CSX SD50, all were from Amtrak so I couldn't get shots of any of them exept for the CSX SD50 ( Isaw it from the train AND while railfanning).
  • Like on a BNSF track here in becker sometimes i will see a train being lead by a NS engine or CP rail engine even sometimes do they get permission from BNSF to run there engines down there tracks or is BNSF using the engine for rent or what? Or if you see like BNSF train leading with CP rail engines as the 2nd or 3rd engine etc.
  • I see BNSF a lot here in Columbus OH.
  • There is a picture on "railpictures.com" of a BNSF loco pulling through my hometown of Morristown, TN. When I was a kid, it was Southern, later NS. What is a pumpkin doing in east TN? Is this a common practice? What about UP, or other roads?
  • Well, for whats it worth, I live out here in Arizona. BNSF up north, and UP down south. I was up on the main TransCon Line for BNSF, and saw quite a few NS engines with them. One had 3 NS SD70's (or maybe Dash -9's, dont know my engiens that well yet, plus it was dark and they were fast) being lead by a -9 pumkin headin west with intermodal. its not uncommom either to see "Black" in the BNSF yard here in Phoenix as well.

  • Hi John, thanks for the reply. I too am in Phoenix. I guess the railroads have some kind of equipment/track sharing system worked out. I'll keep my eyes open for NS rolling through Phoenix.

  • Donald.
I imaigne the only place you will see one (in the Phoenix area)would be along Grand Ave or in the BNSF yard. I am not sure how often UP runs anyone else's power. I live with in a half mile of the UP line that is the Phoenix Spur from the Sunset Route. ( I think I got that right) Anyways.. I hardly see anyone elses power on there other than UP. Guess UP doesnt play well with others.

I talked to the train master at BNSF and he said that so many companies have power shortages that they will grab it wherever they can. And yeah, ( i asked) he wasnt sure how they kept track of it all. He just turns on them table and sends back up the hill to the Trans Con. Last time I saw a Black Horse was a SD60. Cool looking engine. Where in Phoenix are you? I am out by way of Gilbert.

  • Hi John.
I live in North Phx (51/Greenway), I spend a little time around the Grand Ave yard and sometimes Holbrook when I'm on my way to visit in Colorado. I think I like the NS black paint because it reminds me of home. And they do look good, especially when their clean.
Can you recommend a good hobby shop, or do you buy off the internet?
    Ever go to Canyon Diablo?
    Take care.
    Donald.
  • Donald,

I agree with you on the NS scheme. I would love to get a AC4400 NS for the layout. Theyjust look mean amd cool. Plus,I think the big Black engine kinda gives me an idea of the Old Monsters used to look like.

I have been useing a new shop called Basic Trains. Sam runs the place. Unfortunaly, he hs been havening helth problems as of late and has had to go to shorter hours. He is open Thurs, Friday, 3-7 pm Saturday, 9-5 (I think) and Sunday 1-5 (or close to it) He has the best prices in town I have found. I have been to the two othe rbig train shops and he has them beat by alot. He has a pretty good stock of HO and N. Allthough, right now is shelves are thinner than normal since he went to the Tucson Train Show. But should have more soon. ( I am in the like 2 times a week so if there is somethign you are looking for, I can probably tell you if he has it in stock [:D]) His web page is www.basictrains.com. He has phone number and hours. He should also have adress too. He is over in Scottsdale area (Thomas and Hayden)
If you go, call, make sure you let him know that "Hunter" sent you.

Its great that you live in Phoenix. if you ever want to chat some more (As I looking for folks here in town to meet and vist) feel free to email me direct. canazar@aol.com.
