Well I'm considering a new camera scene mines falling apart and the MP is very low. What one would you recommend. I know I don't want a 7-8 MP, it would be nice, but WAY to much our of my price range. I was thinking a 6 MP, but would a 5 MP be just as good? Plus how much would a 5 or 6 MP camera cost? 200s to 400s. They're not that bad, and it's what I used until mine died from a combination of being pointed into the sun and being dropped...
Actually, I'm going to go ahead and make a reccomendation for my favorite camera of the line. The Canon Powershot S3 IS is a bang-up camera. However, most cameras in that range will probably do all you want and more.

Alec, it does seem we have been seeing the same things, and in some cases the EXACT same things. You should be seeing a KCS Southern Belle within the next week, lol. I'm hoping to see some more EJ&E trains this week, but sometimes they can be very unpredictable.
Yeah, I don't really care too much how many MPs my camera has all that much. I'm fine with what I have now.

Did some Sunday Railfanning today.
Caught IC 6056 at Graphic packageing today. A little diffrent angle. The lighting is Horriable.
This next shot I have ben wanting to try for a long time. To bad the lighting is to bright.

While I agree that megapixels definitely aren't the most important stat, it still is a factor to consider in a camera. Obviously there's a difference between a 3 MP and a 6 MP camera that's fairly noticeable. I always figure that with the larger the megapixel you can afford the better, though once you start getting above 6 or 8 the noticeable difference becomes smaller. From my experience the more original pixels you have, often the better the photo will look when resized, and you can afford to loose a little more of the picture to cropping without reducing the image quality. You can often see more of the details of things in the full size image. Sure, MP isn't the only thing you should look at, but it still deserves attention too.
I've heard good things about Canon's S3 IS too. While I haven't used it personally, I have seen some good results with it, and I've seen it recomended several times by a few decent photographers. Investing in a good photo editor would probably be a helpful thing too, though if I remember right WC fan, you said you already have Photoshop Elements. I would think that'll do the trick.

Noah makes great points (And I fully agree) but these days, megapixels barely matter. Almost all cameras have 6-8 (Or 5, but that's not gonna make all that much difference) and you have to remember that an 8MP compact camera isn't going to have the detail or clarity of an 8MP DSLR, because the sensor is physically smaller. I'd rather have a good 5 MP camera than a mediocre 8MP anyday!
That being said, if you see a 3MP, just...don't.
Definately true. I started in digital (well, my first real buy, i had a seriously horrible one before that I tinkered with) with a Kodak 3.2 MP. At the time it was great, getting to see my stuff right away and nice and big on the screen. I then bought a Olympus somethin' or other, and LOVED the lense. It had 5 MP, and 2.8 Optical zoom. The zoom was boring, but the lense was very nice and clear, great clarity. I now have the Panasonic DMC-Z7 Lumix. I love it, but wish for this same exact camera with an Olympus lense. Ive been through 3 cameras in just under 3 years, not bad!

Well, I currently have three cameras, two Kodaks and a Olympus. I used to have some digitrex camera and another olympus but the digitrex was a piece of junk and the olympus' zoom was shot and wouldn't work. My Kodak 5MP camera is my main one that I use most often. I need to catch the 6071 again before CN does away with it.
If anyone is interested, I've put some older WC photos from early 2006 on the Homewood, IL album on rrpicturearchives. However, my site on there seems to be down. I'll have to get on top of that soon.
well i did go today. first on my trip i stopped in the fond du lac yard & saw 3 SW1500's 1570, 1571 & 1558.
next 336 is leaving FDL theirs a train that left right ahead of this & you will see it later IC 2711 leads this one
next the train that left before 340 i was able to get it at Byron hill we pased it a good ways until i got ahead of it. i didnt get pics of the helpers but WC 6902 & a GTW GP38-2 untouched
the 2 Engines were Norfolk southerns
on to train fest now. saw some intresting stuff i picked up the clear block 5 volume wc dvd set for 75.00 & a wc shirt for 12 well it was 15 % off. & i also got a CN hat from a freind i met up w/.
after the show i headed over to muskego yard..... well i did see some cool stuff but i dont think i ever will go back their beacuse its not in the greatest neighborhood.
anyways i was over the 27th street bridge & i seen 3 SOO GP38-2's & a CP GP38-2
next i see a Bandit Switcher
SOO wide vision caboose
a Train comes into the yard
then a ES44AC & A SOO engine switchin
then i headed over to Duplainville & boy was i lucky when i was on 94 crossing the cn tracks a cn train headin north & then when i got to duplainville a CP westbound came by.
then the CN N/B w/ IC 6007
then about 5 mins later another CP west bound i think it was the 2 i saw in muskego earlier & a SOO SD60 was trailing.
well the CP died down so i went up to the CN sideing where a train was sitting
then back at the CP the eastbound light was green & it was the #8 Empire Builder
then i headed out when i headed out CN south came by & ya im mad that i missed it
well friday was a day of fanning madness. even had a pleasant surprise!
i waited at the east end of Altoona and finally the train came through. A typical SD40-2 trio was the power as well as a GP39-2 bringing up the rear.
next we have the always-awesome NS SD60s on the ZCHEM. i chased this train to Elk Mound to catch this unit.
and just as i was leaving, i caught this lovely solid-UP consist on the MBUPR.
ah it was a good day for railfanning indeed
