  • Hey, been awile, I have some pics to post, but I cant right now. But, tonight I am leaving for Altoona, Pennsylvania and will be there all weekend. I will have some great shots from horseshoe curve. Is anyone else going to be up there? Mike

  • gee i would love to join you, but alas I live in michagan how far is it from Port Huron MI more than likely too far.

    i am volenteering at Hobo Fest here in town tomorow, talk about irony im doing crowd controal for CN's "lil obey" you know right after bashing on CN. lol                                                                unfortunatly flagg coal won't be there this year, the owaso steam instatute raised the price of the little 0-4-0 from $3000.00 to $5000.00, still not that bad for two days of servace.

  • While CN isn't the best railway in the world, the reality is they are a business so they can care less what any of us think about them. Personally, I didn't think they tried hard enough to sell some of the engines they scrapped last year. I think CN could've sold way more SD45s to other companies then they did. Other then leasing companies, only 3 were bought by short lines. Honestly, I thought more shortlines would be interested in the engines CN has sold. I have to make a correction to an earlier post I made. It is WC 7504 sitting in the deadline at Homewood, not 7514, and the CN switcher there is one of CN's own switchers, not a WC repaint. WC 7637 is now in the deadline with 7504 and 3006, plus there is now a second line of engines that includes a CN SD40-2W and a couple GT GP9Rs.

    i happen to miss the new london train again. & im mad that i did beacuse it was a illinois central. my mom happened to get stopped in the next town where the tracks go & called ne back at home & said ya it just passed us. well a few hours later i thought it was it but it sounded like a train on the mainline a couple miles south. but i think it was it & it was IC 3120

  • Well, I've spent the last two days visiting two of the busiest spots in the Chicago area, Blue Island and Dolton. While the surrounding areas at both of these junctions isn't the greatest, but they both provided plenty of good action, including UP 3300 at Dolton yesterday and a very rare move at Blue Island today, a IHB transfer on the Metra line to the Chicago Rail Link, which meant the IHB briefly running down the old Rock Island tracks. Usually CRL brings the transfer to the IHB. Other then that it was unusually slow at Blue Island, but I am hoping to go back soon since it usually is much busier. Still, I feel Blue Island is the better of the two spots, but both of them provide plenty of trains. Dolton probably has more trains overall, but Blue Island has much more variety plus Metra on the overhead line to keep things busy. I also made a stop at Homewood and caught a GT GP38-2 switching and more engines including WC 7637 in the deadline. Speaking of WC SD45s, I have heard that 7525 is waiting to be interchanged to the IHB for forwarding to Proviso, if it hasn't ben interchanged already. Once it gets to Proviso it will probably either be put on a train at Proviso for Belvidere and dropped off at Union on the way up, or sent to West Chicago yard to be put out on a local and be dropped off at Union. Either way, it should be at IRM within the next few days if everything works out.

  • Sorry Max. To me it feels a little bit directed to me in some ways. Like I said I hate seeing the CN red or Grey Ghosts. But that's because I have seen the same locomotive (Road Number) like for a good 4 months or so. It just gets boring to me. So sorry Max if what you said has some sort of connection to me. OK, back to our usual talk.

    Tomorrow I sure hope I can catch the local switcher in town. It maybe an IC or it could be a CN. I really don't know. I don't think I'll be able to get to Stevens Point this month at all. I some what want to go there to see some IC locomotives. With the possibility they might be getting scrapped.

    i guess a list was put out some DMIR units, GTW GP9's some CN GP9's & 2 Barn units that just about everyone wants out cause Foamers hate them, crews hate them.

    Today I missed 2 things. A GTW SD40-2 that was supposable in our yard, and was supposable in GTW paint.

    I also missed the switcher in town. I heard the horn, but it never came to the factory I usually go to. Man I need a scanner.

    i am not just saying they suck of the paint, its just its getting drab around here i have to drive for miles to get anything other that CN or CSX, its gotten to the point where i dont go out and railfan anymore.

    CN is now just big busness, no home town feel to it.

  • Crews other then the DM&IR probably really aren't fans of the DM&IR engines. It was the same thing with the SD45s. IC and GTW crews hated those, thats why it was so rare to see them lead down IC or GTW lines. Only WC crews seemed to like them. There was a WC SD40-2 at Homewood the other day, but I couldn't get the number of it. I'm thinking maybe it could've been 6003. There is a second DM&IR SD40-3 in another deadline at Homewood, but I also couldn't get the number of that one, plus there was also another BC Rail RS18 with it. There are also at least 4 IC SW14s deadlined along with the WC and DM&IR engines, so IC engines are just starting to be retired. There were two sets of CN power, a GTW ex-DT&I GP38-2 and CN slug, and one set of SW14s switching the yard instead of mostly SW14s like usual, so those are being used less frequently now. Hopefully CN isn't starting to phase out the SW14s now. I know there are only 3 or so SD40-2s left in GTW blue so those are very hard to catch. The rest of them have been repainted into CN paint. I'm not sure if CN has repainted any of the 3 so it is possible these are even fewer. Ever since I posted that I was seeing a lot of WCs at Homewood, it really has died down lately other then power stored in the deadlines. I haven't seen one operating since 3024 in June, plus the map engine is no longer assigned to Homewood after spending a few weeks in local service. Hopefully all of that will change soon plus if 7525 operates at IRM, it won't be very hard to see one. I'll keep tabs on 7525 and I'll post when I know 7525 is at the museum.

  • Well, I had a very interesting 3 day weekend, with railfanning each day. Here are some photos.

    Day 1

    The deadline at Homewood is growing again.

    GTW ex-DT&I GP38-2 6224 head past the Homewood Railroad Park.

    IC SD40-2 6066 makes a appearance second out on a southbound manifest. I haven't posted the shot of the lead SD50F yet. I was quite happy to see this.

    The other end of the deadline at Homewood, including WC SD45 7637

    On to Dolton, where it was busy as always, as two trains meet here. Unfortunatly I got blocked out from getting a better pic of the CSX train by the Dash 9.

    Another IC SD40-2! 6017, a rebuilt SD40A trails a fake WC SD40-3 on the IHB.

    3 leasers from 3 different leasing companies, HLCX, GECX, and LTEX, along with a UP SD60, head light eastbound. Quite a consist! Note the CSX train coming around the curve next to it.

    Another leaser, CEFX 1041, heads through Dolton.

    The crummiest shot of the day, and the rarest train of the day, UP 3300, the United Way engine, heads down the UP mainline. A couple of years ago it would've been possible to get right up by the UP tracks, at the diamonds, but that area is now off limits due to a couple of visitors who ruined it for everyone.

    I don't have my photos from day 2 posted yet, so I'll post those later, onto day 3, which was a very brief trip, just one train. That one train just happened to be another IC SD40-2! This one, 6252, is just one of a few 6200s left in IC paint, and it was at UP's Proviso Yard, meaning I saw each of the 3 on a different railway.

    It was a very successful weekend filled with plenty of good, unusual power, and in the case of 3300, one of a kind engines. I'll post my shots from day 2 which includes a shot of a CSX train and a IHB transfer later.
