No. Desals are done by model. Like SD45 was like the 45th model. But they skip numbers. Like ther is a GP30, a GP35, a GP38, and a GP38-2. Just got to know what they look like to tell the diffrence.
Two of the easiest locomotives to classify are the GP38
And the SD40-2
These are very common locomotives.
You can easily tell them apart by there wheels.
Memorize these locomotives..you will see them a lot!
GP stands for Genral Purporse, and SD stands for Six Drivers, or somting like that. Also An easy Loco to reconise would be a SD45. Got the big ratatior in back.
This is a pick with the LONG hood forward. It is easer to tell.

Also a GP40 can get mixed up with a GP38-2. But there is a little box infront of the Dynamic Brake(It there is one) on the GP38-2. The GP40 dosn't have one.
Also another easy one is the SD60M. It has the 3 window cab. But some of them didn't have the 3 windows. So if you look at the back it is stright, not flared. Also there is somting triangler behind the cab on the walk ways. That is also a easy feature.

thanks for the info every1 here r some of mine
0-8-0 tender: 4-4? or would it go 0-8-0-4-4
0-8-0 Tender:4-4? or 0-8-0-4-4
what are these?
thanks again

For steam you don't count the tender. Just the locomotive weels. So The first one would be a 0-8-0 and the second a 0-8-0
The Santa Fe one I can't Tell you. I only know GP30 up
The New Haven One I don't know. I need to looks it up but the fans are placed more to the left than what I normally see.
And the last one is a GP38-2. You can tell because between the cab and the first fan there is a "box". That is a clear sign of a GP38-2 or GP38. The locos get more complaced and look the same as they go up. You would know what a SD45R would look like or a GP15C a GP30C, or a GP9M. They all look diffrent. Just takes some time.
