Here's the BNSf train approching the tunnel.

Here she is going though the tunnel.

    Here's the helpers.

Speaking of photos, I've been FAR behind uploading them. Until today I hadn't updated my rrpa site since the 14th, yikes!

That's okay, I haven't updated my RRPA since I stopped failing at photography ;)

  • TrainManTy:

Your layout is extraordinary. Seriously. I especially like the bend where there is a lot of trees on each side of the single main.

    1) Layout Size?

    2) DCC?

Once again, I am in awe.

    Shock [:O]

Alec, I think you hit the nail on the head.

I've always thought that there are sort of three different "types," if you will, of railroad photographers, at least from my experiences. There are those who are out to get only the perfect picture, and refuse to take the shot unless everything is exactly right. Then there are those who are out to take pictures to just capture a moment in time the best that they can, in hopes that the picture comes out pretty well at least. They go home with their pictures and evaluate, and maybe pick some of the best to share with the rest of the world (like through the forums). And then there are railfans who feel that almost every picture they take should be plastered anywhere they can find a place to put it, and that their photographs are the best thing since sliced bread. It doesn't matter how good the photo is, just that they took it.

I'm more than willing to admit that I take bad pictures all the time. If you were to look at my "raw" collection, you'd find a heck of a lot of horrible shots. Even the best photogs take bad pictures sometimes. But to me what truely makes a photographer good is that they develop an eye for what a good photograph is. They also learn that the bad pictures are the ones that should be filed away for the personal collection, not put up on the internet. I have a lot of bad photos that mean something to me, but that I wouldn't bother posting anywhere because they won't mean much to anybody else as they look horrible. And then I have just a lot of plain bad photos.

I don't submit much to railpictures anymore myself. A couple years ago I did submit a lot of shots, but I got tired of all the rejections (though looking back, I realize that 9 times out of 10 the screeners were right, my photo wasn't good enough for them). One of the things I did though was use the rejects as a teaching tool. I'd evaluate why they rejected the photo, and try to take the knowledge to the field with me the next time. I do really think I owe a lot to rp.net over the years for helping me get a better handle on photography. Of course, I have improved my skills a little since I used to submit photos regularly, and improved my camera equipment. Some days I think I should upload a few photos again just for kicks, to see if they'd make it in or not...

    AMEN!

This is a conversation that took place between me and the hostler on a railfan day thing at the NSSR a couple years ago, we had the #193 posed for a shot.

Super Foamer (which multiple camera's over shoulder): WAIT WAIT! GO **** THE CAB DOOR!

    Me: Ummm

Foamer: It will ruin the shot if the doors open!

    Me:Ummm

Hostler: We're airing out the cab. Max lets go.

    Me: Yea.

    *Walk Away*

    Behind Us, Foamer: Grr

    *Crunch, Crunch, clamberclamberclamber, BAM!

Foamer: Ok guys lets take some photo's!

Me and Hostler : hehehehehe, bastards.

  • see i was nice and humble when i was up there Tongue [:P]

and as a result, i got to see WC 7495 inside and out. and get some nice pics of other equipment. did i ever share those pics with you guys? i dont think i did. here we go!

the 2719 resting. at the time, it still was not yet running. i had obtained special permission to venture out here and shoot it.

7495's guts. it was hard to get a nice shot due to the tight space. but you can tell that's a 20-cylinder 645

hey check out this MILW 2-D-D-2. one of the largest electric locomotives ever built!

GP30s like to get up close and smell you. at least that's what this pic implies.

a museum in Duluth would never be complete without a DMIR locomotive. and check out the sleek shiny paint on this one!

check these out. i've never seen anything like these before. BN had interesting stuff!

lousy light, but you can still clearly see what this unit is. and god was it ever awesome!

dammit NOW i see where the throttle was. i was in a hurry as my parents were waiting to pick me up, so i had to rush my limited time in the cab of this legendary machine

all in all, this place is amazing. i spent hours sitting on 7495's nose. it was so awesome!

now with new CNW bilevels and 2719, i REALLY need to get back over there!

    Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.
