  • I do a fair amount of Photography and some Video when I can get access to a camcorder.
  • I take both video and stills when I'm out railfanning with the camcorder on a tripod while I manipulate the camera a short distance away to avoid any shutter noise on the video. Sometimes it's a lot to concentrate on and do two things at once, but I find that video with the action and fairly good sound really is worth the work--esp. with steam.
Nowadays, there's plenty of good video producers out there, so chances are that you'll be able to find a decent video of almost any rail subject. But, there's no substitute for having your own memories and perspectives documented for posterity as well.
  • i just record the engine #'s,train symbol, time occasionally, location occasionally, and direction of the train. im all about the logbook

  • I photo trains.

Nowadays I usually take a camera with me, just in case something interesting rolls by. I'm kicking myself for not having photographed C&NW units in yellow and green while I still could!
Captain, I live in Rochelle Il. and every now and again i`ll see a C&NW unit still in it`s yellow and green come thru town. Next time I see it, i`ll get the number for you.
  • [8D][8D] i used to take pictures the last ones i had were the best two up 6900 cenntennials 1 in NLR ARK the other in Omaha Neb [8D]
[:o)] I also had M.K.T. pictures from dallas before the light rail
[:(] I still remember the A.T.S.F. DALAS YD & Zatcha JCT near Garland TX
  • Most of the time I take my SLR and digital still cameras when I go rail fanning when I just want photos or I'm in an area where a camcorder would not wise to use.
When I do use the camcorder, its in an area where I will get quality video and in a safe location, then I copy video to computer then burned onto CD and eventually DVD.
  • I live just 100yards from the CN rail staging yard. I pass it every day so i see every thing and will stop and watch for hours .
  • My railfanning trips for the time being are kept to the Vancouver area.
    The equipment used:

1 SLR camera with and extra lens, filters and a lens hood.
    extra film
digital point and shoot with extra batteries.
large ziplok freezer bag to put my SLR camera in to protect against rain.
    camcorder with extra battery packs
tripods and bags to hold my equipment.
scanner with rail frequencies programmed in.
    most importantly.....common sense.

  • I always take both, but not always use them. At the Northeast corridor a ditigal camera can be a problem with which the speed they travel at.

  • Would you rather thravel by "Amtrak or "Fancy Rail" (Oriental Express) or by Plane ? If you choose plane specify which airline

for all if you choose one then explain why

eg - I like going by Amtrak because it is a great way to get to see the landscape and a less expensice and more enviromentally friendly[:)]
  • Why waist money on film when you can just remember it in your mind but i guess people are crazy enough...
  • From a very young age my Dad took me along to photograph trains...not having a camera of my own to use, I became bored very easily and didn't develop much of an interest. Just when I thought Railroading was completely out of my life I had a son who (with a little help from Grandpa) developed a keen interest in trains. I now take him places to see trains and we BOTH bring cameras. I am a very avid photographer in general, but find having a camera in hand while viewing trains "legitimizes", in a way, my being there...and brings with it the mental enjoyment of planning and executing a good photograph.
  • I have many photos of my railfan trips along the North Atlanta Division on the NS. Lots of black and whites with horses and plenty of blue conrail too. Always take photos on trips with friends! It makes good memories and can be lots of fun!!!!
