I don't take many pictures, but I always keep my digital camera handy 'cause you never know what my pop out. I saw a van (caboose) at the tail-end of a long CN freight at Bayview Junction a few weeks ago. A blast from the past...but of course, the camera was in the car.

I shoot both digital and film photos and carry my cameras only when I am on asignment these days, however years ago I carried a camera and would shoot any train that came past me from many different RR companies, of course back then there were a lot of companies including logging railroads and some short lines.

If I'm "seriously" railfanning, then the camera is usualy at hand. HOWEVER I drive so much most of the trainspotting I do is at underpasses or a fly by in the road net to a mainline![;)]

Unfortunately I live in a place where, despite it's size, there is very little rail traffic - Phoenix, AZ. I carry my digital camera with me most places just in case. I have gone to the BNSF and the UP yards but got run off by the boss at BNSF. I have done some picture taking along the BNSF mainline through western New Mexico - a very high traffic area. Shot some in Iowa and plan on trying to get to Rochelle, IL next June when we go to Iowa (on the SW Chief) to visit family.

Hey jttigges, with the UP Sunset line just a few miles south of you, it should be fairly easy to do some heavy duty railfanning!!

Always take a camera with you..always!! Get plenty of shots of your favorite locos and rolling stock. Years from now when you go to model one of those you will be right on the money with out doing tons of research.

Railfanning sure is diffrent today. All the railroads are merged and there are only a few class ones and 600 or so shortlines., I was born in the middle 30's and the 40's-50 's was my railfan days that started me in my career as a railroad employee. I was a rail fan then and I still am ,even though I miss the local passenger trains run by the individual railroads. The station was the hang out for railfans (few of us then) so the passenger train was our focal point. Look at today---------patroit act ---terriorist and the police lots of them. I am sick to death of being asked what am I doing on PUBLIC PROPERTY. WITH A CAMERA IN MY HAND. What else would I be doing, these idiots have nothing to do but harass. I was a Manager on a railroad and I know what trespassers are and the damage they do=========but======== yes, but today things are worse-----or is it---I dont believe it for a minute this is just a giuse for the government getting more control on us----the railfan and free people-----taking out GOD given rights away every day it is sickining and I am fed up with it. DID THE TERRIORIST'S WIN .....THEY SURE DID!!!. Try taking pictures in Fort Worth tower 55...They got cameras all over. I had to go to Centenial Yard to get a pass so I could take pictures can you believe this?? I was a Road Foreman of Engines and Fort Worth was my territory...now I need a pass...bill s--- is my opinion. I will not put my camera down for any of them except my dead hands

When I first began to consider a model railroad layout. I would take pictures of ever situation I crossed. I like the old railroad buildings and yards. I thought that
I could incorporate every place I lived into a railroad layout. Must of my pictures are midwest and eastern US...Cleveland OH - Syracuse NY - Trenton NJ. These are some special history to me of railroads.

My G/F and I used to shoot video and photos. I shoot photos and she shoots video. But the truth is that we never watch the video we shoot. So now she shoots digital camera while I shoot 35 MM. If I go somewhere special like Boston I may take the video.

I just feel I do much better and can do more with the photos like post them etc.

I take pictures as much as I can.The camera is always in the vehicle with me.I wanted to take a picture of a stopped ns intermodal on the old nkp line this morning but it was in an unsafe spot.As far as video/digital equipment maybe Santa can stop by the house.Matts been good

What can I say. I have one camera that does both video and digital stills. A great buy -- pay once for the optics, use it both ways.

You got to take SOME pictures. I have some of an "Asplunt" work car (the company has been around for years for brush removal and tree trimming on roads but this car looked like a chemical spraying car). The Blackland shortline has RS-somethings and a dismantled steam engine, and the Trinity Rail Express still has some Budd cars they use. Amtrak in D.C. still has some NW-2 switchers in service and on film at my house.

I used to work as a cameraman. Since I changed professions,my wife has taken it upon herself to get me to upgrade my video gear. Now, I can fit digital video (my third generation of video equipment) and still photo kit in a reasonable gear bag or around my neck and be ready for anything.
