What I did on my summer vacation

  • My first visit to the Illinois RR Museum during "Diesel Days". Was able to ride the Nebraska Zephyr and a home town favorite from the 60's - CNW Bi-levels that were the pride of the Peninsula 400. After that, a visit to the famous double main diamonds at Rochelle. It was a fantastic weekend with a group of fellow model RR club guys. Our overnight stay at DeKalb, IL was right on the UP mainline - so more train watching within feet of our motel room. A very memorable trip.
  • Not as vacation but as a day trip , visited Steamtown in Scranton, Pa. Great ride behind
steam from Scranton to Moscow, Pa and back; crew friendly and informative. Backshop,
roundhouse and all facility clean, bright and fun. Recommend this as a place to go
    when in the Northeast

  • Went to Crafton High Reunion in August (Pittsburgh) then to Johnstown museum, the Portgage Railroad Museum, Gallitzen, Horseshoe Curve, and Altoona Museum. Covered too much for one day. Need to go back. The Horseshoe Curve has always been something special to me, and it was great to actually stand on the hallowed ground.

  • Vacation? I don't get a vacation. I'm retired. I volunteered as train conductor often at Mid-Continent, where I also worked at restoration of MLS&W 63, Montana Western 31, and Copper Range Railroad 60, in addition to Rock Island 1094. Nubes

  • For my birthday gift this year my wife and I along with 8 friends rode the CMR dinner train from Lewistown Mt to Denton Mt and return. It was an absolutely beautiful time, the scenery was stunning, we were treated to a double rainbow to go along with a fantastic meal. This is the The Charlie Russell Choo Choo train. A GP-9 owned by CMR(Central Montana Railroad) pulls five Budd RDC's made over into nice dining cars.

  • I took the Ontario/Quebec "circle" trip this summer. This included nine railroad museums, four excursion train rides powered by diesels, three train rides powered by steam locomotives, and two electric trolley rides. The trip took 19 days.

  • About 12 miles from Bardstown ky in New Haven is an old depot-museum with a
model room, and a real good short train ride (about 25 miles) good scenery very
relaxing. Not too high priced good for family outing, kids of all ages will enjoy it--we
are a little older, had a very good conductor on train seemed to know a lot about
trains. Check it out if in that area worth a look.
