What I did on my summer vacation

  • My wife, son and I hit a full court press of WV. Went to Cass all the way to the top, Cheat Mt. Salamander to old town of Spruce in a built new(2000) 1920's motorcar. The Durbin Rocket, Climax was down with broken axle, but the little Whitcome worked just fine. The New Tygart Flyer behind old WM BL-2(?), and of course finished up with the Potomac Eagle. Much fun for all thanks to Christy.
  • I rode on the Abilene & Smokey Valley RR at Abilene, KS. It's 10 years old this summer. They have an old Hutchinson & Northern Alco S1 switcher from 1945. The engine motor was origionally built for a submarine. Pretty cool and lots of fun! www.asvrr.org

  • Rode the Cab of Royal Gourge, Durango & Silverton, Georgetown Loop, Cambres & Toltec, Grand Canyon, Verde Valley, Pikes Peak. All were a wonderful experence. Also visited Golden Train Museum. Also made Amtrak 8,000 mile tour. It's been a busy year. Not bad for an 80 year old young man. Been a Rail Fan all my life. Art. Simmons Sr. Phoenix,Az.

  • Texas is huge, We toured all over in East Texas found some old stations in out of the way places. I am a station freak. We live in San Antonio and the UP puts on a good show most of the time. Visited the new pavillion at Flatonia, Tx where they really did a fantastic job building it. They still have the tower in a park down town. Come on down to Texas

  • Rode the Astoria Riverfront Streetcar in July. I took pictures of an old Southern Pacific caboose on display in Scio, Oregon last month at the city's old depot.

  • My husband and I visited the Western Railroad Museum and the Route 66 Museum at Barstow CA.

We, also visited the Laws Railroad Museum at Laws CA.

The Laws Musuem held something special in my own heart -- SP #9 "Slim Princess". My dad was the last railroad station agent/telegrapher at Keeler CA when SP began ceasing its narrow-gauge operations in the Owens Valley area. When I was a baby, he had actually taken me on a ride aboard this locomotive, which was about 16 mos before her final run.
