Trackside with Erik and Mike, Vol. 53: June 19, 2006

  • Sorry, Mike. If you looked for "no brainer" in the dictionary, you would possibly find "Trackside with Erik and Mike, Vol. 53...."
  • I "had" to vote Erik's as I love those "wide open spaces! And the million dollar sunset in the background just can't be beat! I would have voted for Mike's photo if if it would have shown more of the train. Like more to the right Mike, Sheez!!!!!!!!!!!![:)]
  • FORGET THE CAMERA BAG,THE UN ABOUT THE CRUNCHED EQUIP I`ve forgotten allready! What about digital Rebel IO settings? I `m still learning about the Rebel and your moving on to D20(?). Come on!
  • There is just nothing like a western Nebraska sunset - if I do say so myself!

  • I went with Erik's, that sunset and the signal splitting the trains, rather than the train splitting the signals, that was just cool, lol. Mike's, it's an IC, one of my favorites, but it was just too shadowy (is that a word?) for me. I can take a similar shot just north of here: http://uptrain.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=317863 . Not a really good representation, because the exact lighting conditions weren't duplicated, but ya'll get my drift. I can't take that particular shot of Eriks's around here, lol.

  • Sorry bout that Mikey... even though we liked your shot (which under "normal" circumstances would of garnered my vote) I too went with the "easy to shoot" western sunset (which is NOT easy to shoot at all!) Kudo's to the both of you for your excellent photographic efforts.
  • Go UnderDog, Go! The lush green and the IC and heading to Leithton! That's on my layout of the EJ&E. I just got a research shot out of this voting, Thanks tonnage Mike!
    You got my vote.
  • Erik & Mike. You guys don't make it easy. Both are beautiful photos, the fact that they
are not alike makes it all the more difficult to pick one over the other. I guess that
it must what mood we are in at the time dictates which photo we choose. The
"sunset" photo really grabbed me so Erik gets my vote this time

  • I have already voted but just have a question regarding Mike's photo. When I enlarged
Mike's photo the details were very clear so my question is -- is the rail really as rough
as it appears to be? It looks as if some wheels have been spinning on that curve. Just curious -- any comments?
  • I voted for Mike. The curve and the lush colors of the picture just reeled me right in. I also agree that it is not fair that Erik can use another "old" photo from his trip. Unfortunately many of us are unable to afford to take trips to get the best shot possible. Therefore I believe that the photographer that can take an ordinary scene from a nearby location turn it into an excellent photograph.

  • Had to go with Mike. When looking at train pix I want to see a train, not an artsy silhouette. The sunset shot is very good but it is just that, a sunset shot. The train(s) add interest to the sunset shot but it is still a sunset shot, not a train shot.

One thing to keep in mind is that we need a new photo that's worthy of sharing with the world every two weeks. That's not as easy as it may seem. Also keep in mind that we don't take the photos for Trackside during our work hours, rather during our personal time.

Therefore, if I've taken a railfan vacation you can bet I'm going to use the photos whenever possible.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for voting.

  • This was really a tough one for me. Mike's photo has a certain something about it that I really like; but speaking as a photographer, Erik's photo stands out with the sunset and the light on the sides of the rolling stock.

    Sorry Mike. [:p]
  • Sorry,Mike.[:(] Erik's photo just sank your battleship. That sunset shot is flat out awesome. The reflection of the lights of the moving train on the sides of the hoppers is an added plus.Against another photo yours could have easily won.
